Sealevel Systems designs and manufactures industrial computing and I/O solutions for industrial automation, defense, aerospace, transportation, and communications. All design, manufacturing, and testing are performed in-house at our facility in Liberty, South Carolina.
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer with 5 years of professional experience to design industrial computing products, electronic enclosures, and mechanical assemblies from concept through production. This hands-on role combines CAD design, engineering analysis, prototyping, and manufacturing support, working closely with electrical engineering, manufacturing, quality, and external suppliers.
Reporting Relationship
The position will report to the Mechanical Engineering Manager.
Objectives and Responsibilities
- Design mechanical components, electronic enclosures, test fixtures, and assemblies from concept through production, including new designs and redesigns from written or verbal specifications.
- Create SolidWorks 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings with dimensions, tolerances, GD&T, and material specifications per industry and company drafting standards.
- Package PCBs, connectors, cables, hardware, and thermal management components into enclosures that meet structural, reliability, and environmental requirements.
- Perform tolerance stack-ups and engineering calculations, and select materials, hardware, processes, and finishes using DFM/DFA principles.
- Propose alternative design concepts to meet customer requirements, participate in engineering and manufacturing design reviews, and incorporate review feedback.
- Design parts for sheet metal, CNC machining, injection molding, casting and die casting, aluminum extrusion, and 3D printing.
- Assemble, troubleshoot, and evaluate prototypes, and support prototype evaluation and engineering validation.
- Work with manufacturing personnel and suppliers to resolve design, manufacturing, and assembly issues.
- Maintain drawings, BOMs, assembly documentation, specifications, and design records in PLM/PDM, and process engineering change orders.
- Transition new designs to manufacturing and support existing products through design improvements, obsolescence, cost reduction, and production issues.
- Gather reference information from cross-functional teams and deliver projects on schedule and on budget.
- Other engineering and CAD-related duties as assigned.
- Strong understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to develop accurate manufacturing drawings
- Familiarity with thermal analysis of electronic equipment, including heat transfer principles and computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
- Hands-on proficiency with common hand tools, shop equipment, and precision measuring instruments
- Understanding of how design decisions affect manufacturability, assembly, reliability, and cost
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities
Style
- Well-rounded, detail-oriented team player who enjoys both design and hands-on work
- Takes initiative and manages time well
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly across departments
The above describes the general job requirements. This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of all responsibilities and duties required; other assignments will occur.
Required Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering is REQUIRED.
- 5 years of professional mechanical engineering or product design experience.
- Experience designing electronic enclosures, electronic packaging, or mechanical assemblies for electronic equipment.
- Experience with SolidWorks.
- Demonstrated experience developing mechanical products from initial concept through production.
- Experience designing sheet metal and machined components and assemblies, including mechanical fasteners, material selection, and assembly techniques.
- Experience generating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering documentation in PLM/PDM systems.
Preferred Experience
- Thermal simulation (ANSYS or equivalent) and design of heatsinks, thermal interfaces, and passive cooling
- FEA for structural evaluation
- SolidWorks PDM, 3D printing, and rapid prototyping
- Working directly with machine shops, injection molders, sheet metal fabricators, and other suppliers
- Supporting New Product Introduction (NPI) and production release
