Job summary

A leading engineering firm in Charleston, SC is seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Lead for data center projects. In this role, you will oversee multiple commissioning projects, ensuring adherence to standards and documentation processes. Candidates should have 5-10 years of experience in the Electrical/Mechanical Commissioning field with a Bachelor’s degree preferred. Mechanical Commissioning Lead – Data Centers – Charleston, SC

Our client is an Engineering Design and Commissioning Company that has a national footprint and specializes in MEP critical facilities design. They provide design, commissioning, consulting and management expertise in the Critical Facilities Space. They emphasize reliability, energy efficiency, sustainable design and LEED expertise in consulting for Enterprise, Colocation and Hyperscale companies. Lead the overall mechanical commissioning process, follow organization standards, and oversee multiple commissioning projects for large data center projects. This role acts as a Commissioning Subject Matter Expert (SME) to ensure commissioning experts follow standards, maintain a thorough quality management / QC process, and document client systems. The candidate will also handle technical commissioning issues for data center clients.

Responsibilities
  • Lead multiple Commissioning Projects consisting of a full team of commissioning engineers and commissioning project managers on a wide range of Data Center Commissioning projects
  • Will not manage staff at the onset; candidate will be managing the technical aspect of projects and act as a technical resource for commissioning teams
  • Ensure Commissioning standards are followed for: equipment pre-start-up and start-up procedures; development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and Methods of Procedures (MOPs); comprehensive commissioning documentation
  • Ensure that the overall commissioning process is followed with the highest standards:
    • Commissioning test procedures and reports
    • Commissioning logs, equipment checklists, and other tools to track commissioning projects
    • Comprehensive reports including: recommendations for optimizing building operations; functional checklists; list of deficiencies; equipment operation; maintenance manuals
  • Have the team follow Commissioning Standards:
    • Review design criteria, specifications, drawings, equipment submittals, and other documentation pertinent to commissioning
    • Integrated system testing; Load Bank Testing; compilation of all testing procedure results
    • Functional tests for various building MEP systems, such as fire alarm and control systems, HVAC, Chillers, CRAC units, normal and standby electrical distribution systems, UPS, standby generators, and emergency lighting
    • System Assembly; Commission plan preparation
    • Follow company QC process and procedures
  • Interface with clients, contractors, equipment vendors and owners agents as needed
  • Execute project assignments; Interface with project contractors, vendors, and testing technicians; Interact with all facets of the company: engineering, design, etc.
  • Verification of commissioning results of test reports
  • Assist with field troubleshooting of commissioned equipment as needed; Field experience with Power Quality Analyzers, Power Disturbance Analyzers, Data loggers, and related system testing equipment
Qualifications
  • 5 to 10+ years experience in the Electrical / Mechanical Commissioning field
  • Bachelor’s / Associate Degree as an Electrical Engineer / Mechanical Engineer a plus
  • A/E experience working in complex facilities or mission critical projects
  • Previous Data Center / Mission Critical experience a must
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal (heavy emphasis on writing, documentation, and client interaction)
  • Experience with Level 1-5 commissioning
  • Experience managing commissioning teams and developing plans for large-scale commissioning projects
  • Experience with IEEE / ASHRAE procedures and protocols a plus
  • Possess basic knowledge of systems design for various projects
  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Microsoft Project
  • Previous experience in the Military / Veterans in all branches with Electrical / Mechanical experience is a huge plus
  • Open to 50 – 70% Travel (not long periods of travel; many smaller trips to check on multiple projects); unless based near a major Data Center build, travel closer to 10-20%
  • Must live near a major airport
