Job summary

HDR is seeking a Power Engineer in Training to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team. You will work with a multi-discipline group on engineering consulting for power and energy projects across the U.S. and abroad.

As an EIT, you will perform calculations, develop layouts, and contribute to design basis development while pursuing professional certification and career progression within HDR’s employee-owned culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is required.
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

  • Performing engineering calculations and code reviews.
  • Sizing and selecting materials and equipment.
  • Participating in site visits and surveys.
  • Developing piping & instrument drawings.
  • Developing equipment and piping arrangement drawings.
  • Developing water mass balances.
  • Reviewing manufacturers drawings and submittals.
  • Developing procurement and construction specifications.
  • Performing bid evaluations.
  • Evaluating existing systems and equipment.
  • Technical/report writing.
  • Participating in team meetings.
  • Communicating with equipment vendors.
  • Processing of engineering submittals, and other similar tasks as assigned.

HDR is seeking a Power Engineer in Training (i.e. Mechanical, Chemical, or Electrical EIT) to join our Michigan-based Power Generation team, which provides engineering consulting services. As an EIT, you will be joining a highly capable, multi-discipline team that supports power and energy projects primarily within the utility, independent power producer, industrial, institutional, and municipal sectors located across the U.S. and abroad.

Engineering duties include providing support for engineering and construction projects at power generation, cogeneration, and district heating and cooling facilities for utility, industrial and institutional clients. Project types include combined and simple cycle power generation, reciprocating engine power generation, steam and chilled water distribution, water treatment, air quality control and plant betterment, renewables which includes solar, wind and battery storage. Within those facilities and projects, our work typically includes design and consulting for power generation and energy infrastructure including steam, condensate, cooling water, water treatment, natural gas, compressed air, fire protection, HVAC, air quality control, material handling, and other similar systems.

The position may also include specialized training and assignments (e.g. performing piping stress analysis, heat balances, and ETAP using industry accepted software).

The primary responsibilities of this position may include:

  • Performing engineering calculations and code reviews
  • Sizing and selecting materials and equipment
  • Participating in site visits and surveys
  • Developing piping & instrument drawings
  • Developing equipment and piping arrangement drawings
  • Developing water mass balances
  • Reviewing manufacturers drawings and submittals
  • Developing procurement and construction specifications
  • Performing bid evaluations
  • Evaluating existing systems and equipment
  • Technical/report writing
  • Participating in team meetings
  • Communicating with equipment vendors
  • Processing of engineering submittals, and other similar tasks as assigned
  • Thermal cycle/heat balance development
  • Preparing equipment layouts
  • Feasibility study development
  • Project design basis development
  • Economic lifecycle analyses
  • Technology assessments
  • Coordination of cost estimating and schedule development resources to support project analyses and reports
  • Some travel may be required
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate
  • Candidates without their EIT will be placed into a Design Coordinator job code and will be expected to obtain their EIT for career progression
