Job summary

Roberts Hawaii, Inc. seeks a vehicle maintenance assistant to ensure safe working condition of all company vehicles.

You will assist mechanics, perform routine repairs and preventative maintenance, and generate daily work orders in a busy shop environment on Hawaii’s Kailua-based fleet. Ideal candidates will have at least two years as a mechanic helper, a valid Type 3 Hawaii license, and ASE certificates or equivalent training.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum two years work-related experience as a mechanic helper or equivalent training.
  • Able to calculate basic math.
  • Able to speak, read, write English.
  • Minimum two ASE certificates (e.g. Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Engines, A/C, Transmission) or Hawaii State Mechanic License preferred.
  • Must have Type 3 Driver License with Hawaii driving history.
  • Own basic hand-tools.
  • Flexible work days/hours including weekends, nights, holidays.
  • Knowledge of basic shop equipment and tools.
  • Exercises problem-solving, decisive, and communicates decisions clearly.
  • Keeps information organized and maintains a clean workspace.

Responsibilities

Job description

This position is responsible for ensuring the safe working condition of all Roberts’ vehicles by performing minimal supervised repairs and maintenance of all company vehicles.

Essential Job Functions

Incumbent may perform any or all of the following:

  • Assist 1 st class mechanics with repairs
  • Trains (supervises) underclass technician (i.e., mechanic helper)
  • Performs diagnosis and corrective action of reported mechanical discrepancies within ability
  • Performs routine repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Generates written work orders on a daily basis to account for task(s) accomplishment(s) work performed
  • Performs general house-keeping of shop area
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested
Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) – i.e. skillsets, education, certifications, etc.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years work related experience as a mechanic helper; and or training (e.g. technical / trade school preferred); or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Able to calculate basic math
  • Able to speak, read, write English
  • Minimum two (2) ASE certificates (e.g. Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Engines, Power-train (drive-line), Air Conditioning, Transmission, Engine Diagnosis, etc.) or Hawaii State Mechanic License Preferred
  • Must have minimum Type 3 License with a current valid Hawaii Driver History Record.
  • Must own basic hand-tools (e.g. sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, etc.)
  • Must be able to work flexible days / hours – weekends, nights, holiday
  • Operational knowledge of basic hand tools required
  • Operational knowledge of basic shop equipment (e.g. vise, press, floor jacks, etc.) required
  • Must be able to work flexible days / hours – weekends, nights, holidays

Working Conditions/Job Environment
  • Medium to heavy work: Exerting up to 70 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Must have good manual dexterity which involves frequent bending, stooping, overhead reaching, kneeling, squatting and other physical demands
  • Must be able to work in a repair shop environment where loud noises, exhaust fumes and chemicals are commonly present
  • Must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound
  • TMust have visual acuity to perform an activity such as, but not limited to: operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trade’s tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as mechanics, etc.
  • The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
  • The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system of the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation
  • The worker is subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
  • Some remote work may be necessary
