Job summary

Salish Kootenai College is seeking a qualified heavy truck and equipment mechanic to maintain and repair vehicles used in the Highway Construction Training program. You will also instruct students in basic preventative maintenance and repair procedures to enhance training outcomes.

Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision and adapt to occasional schedule deviations while prioritizing safety and accuracy in all tasks.

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of recent, verifiable experience as a heavy truck and equipment mechanic (5 years preferred).
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong safety and preventative maintenance knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment; order parts as needed; discuss major repairs with supervisor; maintain equipment repair files.
• Classroom and field instruction of students as necessary.
• Maintain equipment and student records as required.
• Assist other departments as needed upon supervisor approval.
• Physically capable of completing repairs in challenging conditions.
• Communicate effectively with a diverse student population and staff; stay calm under stress.

Job description

General Summary:

Maintain and repair trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles used in the Highway Construction Training (HCT) program. Maintain a safe, clean work environment. Ensure safety of self, students, and others on projects and work areas. Instruct students in basic preventative maintenance and repair procedures to enhance truck driving and heavy equipment training. Must have ability to work independently with minimal supervision. The ideal candidate should be flexible, while core work hours are generally consistent, there may be infrequent exceptions as circumstances dictate.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment; order parts as needed; discuss major repairs with supervisor; maintain equipment repair files.


• Classroom and field instruction of students as necessary.


• Maintain equipment and student records as required.


• Position may require assisting other departments as needed upon supervisor approval.


• Ability to physically perform successful repairs in challenging conditions.


• Ability and experience in communicating effectively with diverse student population and fellow employees and remaining calm in stressful situations.


• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Have knowledge of Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Mission and Goals of Salish Kootenai College.


• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• At least 2 years successful recent, verifiable experience as a heavy truck & equipment mechanic. (5 years preferred)


• Class A Commercial Driver’s License with current DOT physical.


• Technical skills in preventative maintenance and truck/equipment repairs, including hydraulic system repair.


• Welding, machine tool, and fabrication experience and ability.


• Familiarity with types of equipment used in the HCT program.


• Verifiable successful experience with truck and heavy equipment parts nomenclature and inventory control systems.


• Computer literate; ability to maintain files and supply reports as needed.
