Job description

The Town of East Hartford is hiring a mechanic to become a part of the Fleet Services team. The role involves performing skilled mechanical work, including the repair, overhaul, and maintenance of diesel and gasoline-powered town vehicles, such as automobiles, trucks, heavy and light equipment, small engines, and other related mechanical systems.

  • Receives oral instructions or written work orders from the Supervisor and plans work procedures utilizing repair manuals, charts, and prior experience. Operates vehicles or equipment, discusses performance issues with the operator, and uses lifts or jacks to inspect, analyze, test, and diagnose malfunctions.
  • Utilizes mechanic hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble, repair, rebuild, or replace defective parts or units. Performs tasks such as engine and transmission overhauls, electrical system repairs and rewiring, brake system maintenance, clutch repairs and replacements, among other mechanical work. Diagnoses significant engine and transmission issues and arranges for outside repairs when necessary. Conducts emission control inspections and upgrades as needed.

    Repairs vehicle bodies, structural members, and auxiliary components using hand and power tools, performing minor welding as required. Prepares surfaces by grinding, filing, and sanding. Installs safety or emergency equipment on vehicles and conducts routine maintenance such as tune-ups, tire changes, and balancing. Adheres to standard safety procedures and regulations while completing tasks. Submits completed work orders to the Supervisor.

    Additional Duties:

    • Repairs and maintains equipment like power mowers and snow blowers.

    • Installs various attachments to vehicles and equipment.

    • Operates equipment and performs general maintenance tasks as needed.

    • Evaluates and prepares vehicles and equipment for repair by external service providers.

SUPERVISED BY:

Receives general supervision from Fleet Maintenance Services Foreman.

The qualifications and expertise for this role typically include completing a vocational technical school program in automotive repair or an equivalent training, combined with four years of experience as a mechanic, including specialized training in diesel engine repair.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles, heavy construction equipment, and other mechanical systems.

  • Strong understanding of hydraulic and electrical systems.

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing automotive, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.

  • Capability to interpret technical drawings, diagrams, specifications, and equipment manuals.

  • Physical ability to lift and/or carry items weighing 25-50 pounds, with occasional heavier lifting required.

  • Willingness to work under adverse weather conditions, such as heat, cold, rain, or snow.
