Job summary

Mesa Public Schools is seeking a skilled Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Technician to maintain heating/air conditioning systems across district facilities. You will identify repair and/or replacement needs, provide information on proper use of equipment, and ensure materials are available to complete tasks promptly.

During probation, drug and alcohol testing is required for safety-sensitive positions; applicants with CDL must be tested per regulations.

Qualifications

  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Valid, or ability to obtain, Arizona driver’s license.
  • Minimum three years journey mechanic training or equivalent work experience with evaporative cooling units and air handling equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Working from a written work order, travel throughout assigned area of the district to perform preventive maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot and repair cafeteria equipment and related devices in a competent and timely manner.
  • Communicate with school site-based personnel to keep them properly informed of equipment status.
  • Communicate with immediate supervisor to keep them informed of a work order status.
  • Keep service vehicle clean, orderly and properly stocked.
  • Process assigned paperwork in a timely manner.
  • Regular and on-time attendance required.
  • Assists with other assigned duties as appropriate to the area of assignment and Mesa Public Schools.

New Hire Experience

1% of the base hourly rate granted for each year of verified like experience (within ten years) beyond the requirement, up to a ten-year maximum

1% of the base hourly rate awarded for an AA or higher degree if not required for the position

Job Summary

To maintain heating/air conditioning systems; to identify repair and/or replacement needs; to provide necessary information on the proper use of equipment; and to ensure adequate materials are available to complete assignments in a timely manner.

Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work Operations in a safety sensitive position. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment. In compliance with federal law, employees required to have a Commercial Driver's License shall also be tested upon application, post-accident and at random.

Required Qualifications
  • High School education or equivalent
  • Valid, or ability to obtain, Arizona driver’s license
  • Minimum three years journey mechanic training or equivalent work experience with evaporative cooling units and air handling equipment

  • Ability to read and to work from blueprints; to understand and to work with voltages up to 480V
  • Ability to understand and willingness to perform preventive maintenance duties
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; to work from a height of up to 35 feet on personal lifts; to climb ladders up to 30 feet to access rooftop equipment; willingness to work alone when necessary
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and to establish and to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships
  • Ability to work overtime and to change schedules with minimal notice; willingness to work non-regular hours (weekends, night shift, swing shift, holidays)
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primarily at school and district locations on rooftops and crawlspaces
  • Exposure to loud machinery, high-voltage electricity, pressurized refrigerants, and combustible gases
  • Often requires movement between indoor and outdoor areas when transporting equipment or accessing external units
  • Frequent walking, bending, kneeling, and squatting to access equipment
  • Safely climb and balance on extension ladders, step ladders
  • Lifting and carrying heavy tools, equipment and parts (50-100 lbs or more)
