Position Summary

Fire boilers and control generation of continuous supply of steam for heating and power to Methodist Medical Center buildings.

Responsibilities
  • Cleans boilers and lubricates equipment;
  • Maintains a constant supply of steam and equipment in boiler room; practices proper adherence to generator logging procedures;
  • Maintains observance of meters and regulates flow of oil or water for proper control of boilers and auxiliary equipment;
  • Remains alert to any malfunctioning of equipment; notifies supervisor whenever major repairs or assistance are required;
  • Checks degree of hardness of water on a daily basis, and regenerates softeners as needed.
  • Mixes chemicals, tests and treats boiler water and air conditioning cooling tower as necessary.
  • Switches boilers from gas to oil upon request.
  • Records inventory of chemicals used in boiler and reports to supervisor when supplies need to be replenished;
  • Maintains observance of emergency board in boiler attendant shop; observes and records emergency generator runs.
  • Maintains clean work area.
  • Performs maintenance and/or repairs on the following systems and/or equipment: electrical; mechanical; plumbing; air conditioning; heating; batteries; boilers; water treatment; and sheet metal.
  • Oversees and ensures safe and efficient operation of physical plant and hospital utilities.
  • Record readings on boiler every 20 minutes and log in on daily record sheet according to regulations (pressure, water level, etc.)
  • Performs preventive maintenance work as scheduled.
  • Recharges and cleans incinerator on a daily basis.
  • Pulls relief duty for vacation and holiday, etc., as needed.
  • Operates computer in boiler office for automation of hospital equipment.
  • Resets elevators and air handling unit equipment due to fire alarm and generator run shutdown.
  • Inspects and operates refrigeration equipment for preserving food, making ice, cooling water and air conditioning Methodist Medical Center buildings; changes air conditioner filters.
  • Provides preventive maintenance for all assigned machinery and mechanical equipment as prescribed by the preventive maintenance schedule.
  • NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Other duties as assigned.
  • HEALTH/SAFETY/COMPETENCE: Cannot pose a direct threat to health or safety of self or others. Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to customer or patient population. Must demonstrate competency of the specific functions described in the performance continuum and skill check lists.
Education/Knowledge/Skills
Qualifications

High school diploma or its equivalent is required. Prior course work in general science and physics preferred. Must be able to read with comprehension, write legibly, and perform simple mathematic calculations. Must have the ability to detect malfunctioning of equipment and possible fire and safety hazards. Must be capable of working under emergency and/or stressful conditions.

Experience

One (1) year experience in building/plant maintenance operations, construction, or with a mechanical or electrical contractor, or a graduate with certification from a trade school in a maintenance related field.

Licensure/Certifications

None is required.
