Job summary

Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas is seeking a Mechanic I to support maintenance, servicing, and minor repairs of tribal vehicles and equipment. You will work under the Lead Mechanic and assist in routine tasks, inspections, and diagnostics in a shop setting.

This entry-level to intermediate role emphasizes safe practices, documentation, and teamwork in Field Operations, with opportunities to develop mechanical skills and advance within the division.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: High school diploma or GED; 1 year in automotive or equipment maintenance or related vocational training.
  • Preferred: Native American tribal membership in Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas; leadership or supervisory experience; experience with heavy equipment or diesel systems.
  • Safety procedures and shop practices are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine maintenance and basic repairs including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
  • Conducts pre- and post-operation inspections on light-duty equipment and vehicles; documents issues and safety concerns.
  • Maintains tools, shop cleanliness, and inventory; assists with loading/unloading parts.
  • Provides basic field service support and helps operators identify simple mechanical issues.
  • Completes basic service logs and maintenance records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned within Field Operations.

Position: Mechanic I

Supervisor: Tribal Field Operations Director/Executive Director

Division: Reservation Services Administration

Department: Field Operations

Responsibilities

Mechanic I is an entry-level to intermediate position responsible for assisting in the maintenance, servicing, and minor repair of Tribal vehicles, heavy equipment, and machinery. This role supports the Lead Mechanic and Mechanic II by performing routine mechanical tasks, inspections, and basic diagnostics. Mechanic I ensures equipment is safely prepared for field use and helps maintain a clean and organized shop environment.

This position is ideal for individuals developing their mechanical skills or beginning their career in heavy equipment maintenance.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following
Routine Maintenance & Basic Repairs
  • Performs oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and fluid checks.
  • Assists with tire repairs, battery service, and minor mechanical adjustments.
  • Performs basic repairs under the guidance of Mechanic II or Lead Mechanic.
Equipment Inspections
  • Conducts pre- and post-operation inspections on light-duty equipment and vehicles.
  • Documents issues, wear, and safety concerns, reporting them promptly.
Shop Assistance
  • Maintains tools, equipment, shop cleanliness, and inventory organization.
  • Assists with loading/unloading parts and materials.
  • Helps maintain safe workspaces by following all shop and OSHA safety protocols.
Field Support
  • Assists with basic field service or breakdown response as directed.
  • Provides support to operators by identifying simple mechanical issues.
Documentation
  • Completes basic service logs and checklists.
  • Assists in maintaining accurate maintenance records.
Other Duties
  • Performs other duties as assigned within the Field Operations.
Knowledge, skills and abilities for the position
  • Basic mechanics, tools, and equipment maintenance.
  • Safety procedures and shop practices.
  • Preventive maintenance routines.
  • Using basic hand tools and shop equipment.
  • Following instructions and learning new mechanical tasks.
  • Keeping tools and workspace organized.
  • Work as part of a team on repairs and shop duties.
  • Lift up to 75 lbs and perform physical tasks.
  • Follow safety protocols and communicate clearly.
Supervision exercised

This position does not carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.

Education/experience requirements

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED preferred. One (1) year of experience in automotive or equipment maintenance OR equivalent vocational training.

Preferred Qualifications: Enrolled membership in the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas (KTTT) preferred. Prior leadership or supervisory experience preferred. Experience working with heavy equipment or diesel systems. Vocational training in mechanics or related field.

Native American preference is observed
