Job summary

Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division seeks a Mechanic Helper to support Fleet Technicians, performing preventive maintenance, tune-ups, oil changes, tire and brake checks, battery and lighting work, and basic body work under supervision.

Candidate should have a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver’s license, and be able to lift up to 100 lbs; shift work is required; safety training and ability to read manuals are valued; prior mechanic helper experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Valid driver's license; must obtain Class A CDL during probation.
• Previous mechanic helper experience preferred.
• Ability to lift up to 100 lbs; able to work indoors/outdoors.
• Excellent mechanical skills and ability to follow instructions.

Responsibilities

• Assist Fleet Technicians with maintenance and repairs on Division vehicles.
• Perform tune-ups, oil changes, tire and brake checks.
• Assist with electrical work: batteries, starters, lights.
• Aid in body work, painting prep, and tool handling as needed.
• Transport parts and vehicles; keep work areas clean and organized.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Assist the Fleet Technicians perform maintenance and repairs such as tune-ups and oil change, checks tires and brakes, replaces spark plugs and engages in other similar tasks. Help Fleet Technicians with electrical systems such as replacing batteries, starters, and lights.May assist in performing body work on automobiles and trucks, holding heavy material; unloading supplies and equipment; removing and replacing truck bodies; filling paint pots and checking out tools, materials and supplies; sand, mask, blow-off and prepare equipment for painting, clean paint booths and various objects and paint as needed.Perform tasks as providing tools and parts; positioning parts for installation; jacking vehicles; etc. Use various tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, etc. in assisting Mechanics. Install, remove and repair tire chains, change tires and batteries on automobiles and pickup trucks as directed, service battery room. Transport vehicles; pick up and deliver parts and supplies. Fill tanks of vehicles as directed; prepare mileage tickets. Clean and wash vehicles, equipment and work areas; handle salvage materials. Learn and practice safety regulations and work standards. Operate Division vehicles/equipment. Perform other duties as assigned.QualificationsLICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSA valid driver's license from state of residence. Must obtain a valid Class A Commercial driver's license from state of residencewithin trial or probationary period after entering classification. Certification from a vocational school, technical institute or automotiveprogram is preferred.EDUCATIONHigh School Diploma or GED required.EXPERIENCEPrevious experience as a Mechanic helper or a similar role is required.ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONMust successfully complete Physical Abilities Test. Physical Demands: Work inside and outside of shop, exposed to irritation from gasoline, oil and solvents; subject to standing for extended periods, climbing, noise, dust and dirt.
