Job description

Schedule: Monday - Friday, Second Shift: 3:30pm - 11:30pm; occasional weekend/evening hours
Starting salary: $51,126.12 - $71,693.88

As part of the interview process a hands-on skills test may be utilized. There will be one test in each of the following categories: basic electrical, basic welding, scanner diagnostics using either Snap on or Cummins electronic tool. The test will be in a shop setting. Proper attire for work in a typical shop setting is recommended and all needed tools/supplies are provided. Max time is one (1) hour.Essential Job Functions The job functions listed herein are neither exclusive nor exhaustive, but are intended to be illustrative of the types of tasks the employee will most likely be expected to perform on a regular basis. The employee may be asked to perform different or additional tasks than the ones listed here, as the needs of the employer and/or the requirements of the position change.

1. Diagnoses malfunctions and makes repairs and adjustments to all equipment to keep it in good operating condition.
2. Performs maintenance and repairs to all systems on automobiles, trucks and equipment owned by the City.
3. Performs preventative maintenance on City-owned automobiles, trucks and equipment to insure proper care and servicing.
4. Performs arc and gas welding or cutting for maintenance, repair and construction of City equipment.
5. Repairs, sharpens and tempers tools.
6. Devises fixtures to facilitate repair work.
7. Maintains records and makes reports as required.
8. Orders all necessary parts for repair and maintenance work.
9. Assists in snow removal operations.


Requirements of Work
Graduation from high school and at least 1 year of specialized training in automobile and equipment mechanics, plus at least 4 – 6 years of related experience and certification as a journeyman mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, ability and skills:

Knowledge of
•The techniques and practices, tools, equipment and materials used in automotive mechanics.
•The techniques and practices, tools, equipment and materials used in arc and gas welding and blacksmithing.
•The properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals.
•Preventative maintenance techniques and practices.
•Occupational hazards and the practices and techniques used to avoid or minimize risks.
Ability to
•Understand and follow instructions.
•Work independently with minimal supervision.
•Diagnose operating malfunctions and make all necessary repairs.
•Operate light to heavy equipment.
•Use all tools and equipment necessary to accomplish automotive maintenance and repair.
•Perform light to heavy physical task under varying weather conditions.
•Keep records and make reports.
•Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers and the general public.

Skill in
•Journeyman level skills in welding, gas and diesel engine repair.
•The operation of a variety of tools and equipment used in the performance of the essential job functions.
•Oral and written communications.

Necessary Special Requirements
CDL with A, B, and C endorsements, and N preferred; A/C certification; fork lift certification; valid Wisconsin driver’s license; ability to complete a pre-employment post offer physical including drug test upon hire, and random drug and alcohol tests thereafter; must provide own hand tools.

•The employee may frequently be exposed to adverse weather and other unpleasant conditions such as heat, cold, wetness and humidity; dim or bright lights, dust, odors, noise, vibrations, toxic agents, asbestos, lead paint, electrical currents, heavy machinery; and occasionally violence, smoke and disease.
•The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to and in excess of 50 pounds.
