The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is recruiting both internally and externally for one or more Mechanic positions. All applicable Bargaining Unit Selection Criteria will be applied when considering applicants.

Position Details

• Position Title: Mechanic
• Salary Range: $39.11 Hourly / $81,348.80 Annually
• Posting Period: July 6, 2024 through July 4, 2025
• Union Affiliation: Amalgamated Transit Union, Division 618 (ATU 618)
• Reports To: Mechanical Foreman

Description of Work

Troubleshoot transit coaches and Authority equipment to identify faults and perform corrective actions. Conduct routine preventive maintenance inspections. Respond to road calls for service and repair. Use test equipment, including electronic engine and transmission diagnostic tools, and shop tools common to the trade. Refer to service manuals and publications for technical information. Must have knowledge of heavy-duty air brake systems, S Cam, and hydraulic brakes. Isolate and repair electrical issues. Perform engine tune-ups and replace components such as generators, starters, and power trains. Evacuate and recharge air conditioning systems, change tires, and perform other work as required. Maintain and prepare maintenance records and repair orders.

Mechanic positions may be assigned to day, evening, or night shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on operational needs. Assignments may be at Elmwood, Newport, and/or Paratransit facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Apply mechanical repair procedures to assess and fix problems.
• Have expert knowledge of systems including: hand tools, heavy-duty air brakes, S Cam, compressed air, drive lines, transmissions, electrical systems, electronic diagnostics, steering, axles, suspension, cooling systems, four-stroke diesel engines, HVAC systems.
• Read and interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical publications.
• Complete written repair orders legibly.
• Be computer literate.
• Hold EPA 609 Freon Recovery Certification.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
