Job Summary

The person in this position inspects, services, and maintains diesel locomotives in accordance with federal and company regulations. Responsibilities include diagnosing diesel-engine malfunctions, making repairs using hand tools, measuring instruments, and machine tools. The role may also involve operating mechanical equipment to assemble, repair, and fabricate metal parts, and qualifying as a shop-service locomotive engineer per FRA standards.

Responsibilities

1. Ensure compliance with all railroad safety and operational rules, including Federal Railroad Administration standards.
2. Perform daily inspections, servicing, and maintenance on diesel-electric locomotives, including scheduled and preventative maintenance, fueling, oil and liquid level checks, filter replacements, and cleaning.
3. Follow FRA regulations and environmental requirements related to locomotive maintenance.
4. Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions in diesel engines and related components, performing repairs or replacements as needed.
5. Conduct locomotive car-body repairs, including metal fabrication and welding.
6. Operate forklifts, cranes, power tools, and hydraulic tools, often in outdoor, confined, or elevated environments.
7. Assist with other projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

• Knowledge of FRA regulations for locomotive maintenance and inspection.
• Understanding of railroad environmental standards.
• Minimum of two years' experience as a heavy mechanic.
• Ability to interpret written and oral instructions.

Education and Credentials

• High school diploma or GED; additional certifications (e.g., locomotive service engineer, welding) are a plus.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Valid driver’s license required.
