This position performs journey-level preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on a diverse county fleet, ranging from standard gasoline-powered light vehicles to heavy diesel-powered construction machinery and snow removal equipment. Operating out of a well-equipped shop, the Mechanic plays a vital role in keeping Valley County’s infrastructure moving by ensuring all fleet assets are safe and reliable.

Working side-by-side with a dedicated crew under the direction of the Shop Foreman, the Mechanic ensures Valley County’s vehicles and heavy machinery stay safely on the move. A typical day balances routine shop maintenance with active troubleshooting, requiring the flexibility to jump from servicing light-duty trucks to diagnosing complex issues on heavy diesel construction machinery. The Mechanic uses everything from modern computer diagnostic systems to traditional hand tools and welding equipment to trace and fix mechanical failures.
