The University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine is seeking a dedicated individual to be the Pillar 3 Director. This position coordinates curriculum and guides students in their academic programs. Pillar 3 occupies the final sixteen months of medical school when students complete required clerkships (sub-internship, emergency medicine, surgery sub-specialties, rural family medicine), electives, and interview for residencies. These clerkships may be located at Rapid City, Sioux Falls, or Yankton, as well as at out-of-state or international locations.

Position Summary

The Pillar 3 Director coordinates curriculum and guides students in their academic programs.

  • Develop, implement and maintain high-quality curricula in Pillar 3 to expand clinical learning opportunities, and to provide training in important and emerging areas, e.g., preparation for residency, Quality/Safety. (40%)
  • Develop and implement new curriculum in Pillar 3 to expand opportunities for students
  • Mentor faculty in required Pillar 3 courses, e.g. sub-internships and in the development of electives
  • Bring new course proposals to the Medical Education Committee
  • Explore options to offer distinction opportunities including micro credentialing and certificates
  • Lead development of the Medical Accelerated Program in partnership with the residencies
  • Collaborate with the associate deans of medical education and medical student affairs and registration officer on Pillar 3 curricular programs. (30%)
  • Collaborate in the implementation and maintenance of online Pillar 3 scheduling
  • Develop and enforce policies for away electives
  • Participate in sessions for Pillar 2 students on Pillar 3 course selection and preparation for residency application
  • Run clinical competency committee meetings and track students on monitored academic status
  • Collaborate with the Office of Medical Education to assure programs meet accreditation requirements. (15%)
  • Work with director of evaluation and assessment to monitor course requirements, evaluation data, timeliness of grades, and duty hours violations
  • Provide regular reports to the Medical Education Committee and Clerkship Directors Committee
  • Serve on the Medical Education Committee Integration Subcommittee
  • Provide documentation when requested as part of continuous quality improvement for accreditation
  • Collaborate with clinical departments and clerkship directors in coordinating required clerkships and electives. (10%)
  • Develop, implement, and oversee the processes of collecting student grades and reporting grades to the registrar in a timely manner
  • Attend the clinical department assistants monthly meeting
  • Attend the clerkship directors monthly meeting
  • Coordinate the Transition to Residency [TTR] course. (5%)
Curriculum Development
  • Attend relevant conferences and symposia relevant to curriculum development in transition to residency
  • Support specialty-specific curricular opportunities for students throughout the week
  • Work with Parry Center to coordinate ‘Night on Call’ simulation experiences for students during Pillar 3
  • Review Program Director feedback on students’ residency preparedness to identify important themes to touch on during course
Precepting
  • Precept small group and large group sessions the week of the course
  • Coordinate daily paging simulation experience and debriefs
Evaluation And Assessment
  • Identify mechanisms for giving students feedback on their readiness for residency
  • Determine how students are assessed and assigning grades for the course
  • Review student feedback on the TTR course and make changes as appropriate
Communication/Coordination
  • Work with Pillar 3 assistant to recruit and schedule faculty for lecture and small group sessions (Morning Report, Journal Club)
  • Develop relevant clinical skills sessions
  • Coordinate sessions with faculty specialists in the area of Financial Wellness
