Position Summary

The starting salary range for this position is $50,412.00 to $59,760.00, with most candidates starting at $50,412.00. This is a full-time, permanent, classified, overtime-eligible position with the Pierce College District. The main work location is Fort Steilacoom campus and standard work hours are between 8:00am and 5:00pm Monday through Friday. This position reports directly to the Embedded Math Specialist and requires regular and consistent attendance. This position is eligible for one day of telework per week after the probationary period.

Math Center Program Specialist

The Math Center Program Specialist helps advance the equity‑centered mission of Pierce College by connecting students with valuable learning support and campus resources, keeping marginalized, socially diverse, and systemically nondominant students at the center of their work. General tasks include overseeing the daily operations of Math Center spaces; supervising student and part‑time hourly staff; assisting in the implementation of staff training and professional development programs for classroom‑embedded support, training tutors to work effectively with faculty and students within grounded, hybrid, and online classrooms; creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for learning; triaging student needs, guiding students to applicable services; tutoring for students in mathematics; and contributing to the establishment of antiracist program standards, services, and procedures. The person in this position will work with the embedded math specialist to: assess the effectiveness of the embedded work in reaching and working with historically non‑dominant students from underserved racial and cultural communities, as well as other marginalized student cohorts; provide counsel and coaching to tutoring staff that supports culturally affirming and inclusive practice; and help conduct reviews of student satisfaction with program services.

Program specialists are also key collaborators in the creation and fostering of a supportive team culture. In order to promote equitable student access and success, the program specialist fosters empowering academic and social experiences for students and part‑time student and temporary staff with active listening, affirmation, and genuine empathy that honors each student and staff member’s journey. Listening, observing, valuing and validating, embracing, and building meaningful relationships with students in the tutoring center is at the heart of this position.

Essential Functions
  • Student Support & Program Coordination
    • Create a Radically Welcoming Environment that Inspires a Sense of Belonging: Oversee center spaces: In collaboration with the embedded math specialist, classified staff colleagues, and student and part‑time temporary staff, create inviting and inclusive learning spaces and services such that students feel like valued members of our community
    • Maintain welcoming and safe center appearance, with functioning and adequate furnishings and resources, problem solving positive solutions, and submitting work‑orders as needed
    • Develop methods to ensure that student voices are collected and included when reviewing center policies, practices, and procedures
    • Interpret and analyze program policies and procedures to identify inequities and dismantle barriers
    • Consistently model professional behavior and effective communication, proactively nurturing a collaborative team environment, actively demonstrate respect for diversity and inclusivity, and serve as a leadership coach for all staff
  • Hold consistent open office hours
    • Be available for timely student and staff support
    • Assist students are who are referred to, or seek out, tutoring or mentoring help
    • Coach staff using empowering techniques, providing the guidance resources, and support needed for them to be successful in their work with students
    • Promote open office hours that are available in multiple modalities (in‑person and online)
  • Provide meaningful customer service
    • Use Active Listening skills, focused on intent to learn and empathize, to offer culturally responsive and personalized consultation to program participants, demonstrating respect for cultural communication differences
    • Host the main desk of the center, serving as primary contact for students, tutors, faculty, staff, and the community regarding program services
    • Arrange peer tutor and mentor matches with student requests for academic support: identifying academic support needs, considering student preferences, and connecting students with most appropriate services and/or resources
    • Schedule appointments and arrange study groups using specialized tracking system
    • Maintain current practice in 1:1 tutoring by working in the Math Center as a tutor to support students
  • Maintain specialized program database
    • Coordinate program services, compile participation data, create process documents, and maintain personnel and student usage records using Microsoft Office programs, related database systems, learning management systems, and other app programs
  • Staff Team Leadership
    • Assist with recruiting efforts
      • Promote work opportunities to students that align with their academic and career goals, with a focus on increasing team diversity to ensure a staff that is representative of our student populations and connecting students with campus jobs and leadership positions that validate identity, build self‑efficacy, encourage teamwork, and foster sense of belonging
      • Collaborate on the development and implementation of equitable and race‑conscious practices that advance the recruitment, onboarding, training, and on‑going support of a diverse and inclusive team of tutors
      • Review applications and conduct interviews making recommendations for hire; complete hiring and onboarding processes and procedures for all new student and part‑time staff
      • Co‑facilitate the tutor training program, taking the lead in coordinating and monitoring onboarding of new student and part‑time staff
    • Mentor/coach part‑time student and temporary staff
      • Coach performance of staff to ensure best possible delivery of equity‑centered services to students, emphasizing the importance of providing empowering experiences that inspire student growth and potential
      • Implement leadership and supervisory practices that foster positive and supportive team culture, demonstrate genuine empathy, inspire a sense of value and validation, and builds meaningful relationships with student and part‑time temporary staff
      • Facilitate team meetings and team communications that invite voices of student and part‑time staff, encourage engagement, and supporting the part‑time program leads in their work as co‑creators of program development
    • Execute supervisory responsibilities for student and part‑time temporary staff
      • Coordinate and prioritize supervisory responsibilities, ensuring that staff are properly onboarded, trained, scheduled, informed, compensated, and supported in the performance of their work
      • Maintain constant and consistent communication with staff team using Outlook email, Microsoft Teams, and other communication apps and systems to assist in creation of center schedules, negotiating staff availability with center operating hours, course offerings, and expressed student needs
  • Participation in Shared Governance and Other Duties as Assigned
    • Serve on campus‑wide committees to support and advance equitable student success to the greatest extent possible.
    • Assist with evaluation and redesign or improvement of program policies, processes, and practices to ensure program outcomes are met within an antiracist framework
Required Education
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Mathematics or related fields OR equivalent professional experience combined with education in Mathematics or related fields. For a Bachelor's degree, the equivalent amount of professional experience is 4 years.
Education to Experience Equivalences

Associates Degree = 2 years | Bachelors Degree = 4 years | Masters Degree = 5 years

Required Experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in at least two of the following areas of mathematics: advanced calculus and differential equations, linear systems using matrices, and/or statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based best practices for student learning and motivation, especially in mathematics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to engaging in the advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion in higher education and to serving socially diverse and systemically non‑dominant students.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse community with a high degree of customer service.
  • Experience working with students who have been marginalized including those who may be economically disadvantaged, first‑generation, and/or first time in college.
  • Experience with supervisory or leadership responsibilities to include creation of positive team culture and coaching staff or team in achievement of organizational and personal goals.
  • Ability to effectively juggle competing priorities while maintaining attention to detail. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, demonstrating cultural awareness and responsiveness.

Terms of Employment

This is a full‑time (40 hours per week), classified, overtime‑eligible position with the Pierce College District. This position is permanent after serving a 6‑month probationary period. The primary work location is at the Fort Steilacoom campus. This position is eligible for one day of telework after the probationary period. Standard work hours are between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required. This position may be subject to reassignment between campuses or sites. This position reports directly to the Embedded Math Specialist and requires regular and consistent attendance.

Salary & Benefits

The starting salary range for this position is $50,412.00 to $59,760.00 annually with annual increments up to $61,332.00. The salary will be determined based on the candidate’s qualifications and related experience. Most candidates will start at $50,412.00. Your paycheck is just part of the total compensation package. There is an outstanding benefits package which is worth an additional value equivalent to about 30% of your salary. Physical Work Environment

This position is required to work indoors in an open office environment, which requires visual concentration on detail, dexterity, precision, and is subject to frequent noise and interruptions.
