Job summary

ORNL's Materials Structure and Processing Section seeks a Materials Tribology Researcher to develop and characterize advanced materials, coatings, and surface treatments for tribological applications in energy systems.

You will lead development, characterization, bench testing, and tribochemical studies, collaborating across groups and with sponsors to meet goals and publish results in peer‑reviewed journals.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • At least 1 year post‑Ph.D. experience in experimental tribology.

Responsibilities

  • Identify failure modes and wear mechanisms via tribosystem analysis.
  • Develop, characterize, and evaluate materials, coatings and surface treatments.
  • Carry out bench tribological testing, friction and wear measurement, and data analysis.
  • Investigate tribochemical interactions at the contact interfaces.
  • Correlate bench testing results with actual component performance.
  • Coordinate research with other team members inside and outside ORNL.
  • Work with sponsors to achieve project goals and deliverables.
  • Present and publish research results in peer‑reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
