Job summary

Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking a Materials Testing Technician to perform entry‑level quality assurance testing of construction materials for transportation projects. The role focuses on lab work with field support, following procedures to ensure material quality and performance.

The position includes hands‑on experience with advanced testing technologies, participation in internal evaluations, and opportunities for growth within the department.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience working in a construction materials laboratory or related testing.
• High school diploma or GED required; post‑secondary education may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
• Must obtain ATTI Soils & Aggregate certification within six months.
• Must obtain ACI Strength certification within twelve months.
• Must obtain ATTI Asphalt, ATTI Field, and Nuclear Gauge & Radiation Safety certifications within eighteen months.
• Must obtain ACI Field certification within twenty‑four months.
• NICET certification in Construction Materials Testing is valued.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing of construction materials for assigned projects.
• Conduct field inspections and testing to ensure compliance with specs and methods.
• Inspect vendor facilities, equipment, and manufacturing processes.
• Participate in proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections.
• Prepare and submit test results and inspection reports for review.
• Maintain, calibrate, and verify lab and field testing equipment.
• Assist in training new Materials Testing Technicians.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
