Job summary

Maricopa County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is seeking a Materials Testing Technician to perform entry‑level quality assurance testing of construction materials for transportation projects. The role focuses on lab work with field support, following procedures to ensure material quality and performance.

The position includes hands‑on experience with advanced testing technologies, participation in internal evaluations, and opportunities for growth within the department.

Qualifications

• Two years of experience working in a construction materials laboratory or related testing.
• High school diploma or GED required; post‑secondary education may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
• Must obtain ATTI Soils & Aggregate certification within six months.
• Must obtain ACI Strength certification within twelve months.
• Must obtain ATTI Asphalt, ATTI Field, and Nuclear Gauge & Radiation Safety certifications within eighteen months.
• Must obtain ACI Field certification within twenty‑four months.
• NICET certification in Construction Materials Testing is valued.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing of construction materials for assigned projects.
• Conduct field inspections and testing to ensure compliance with specs and methods.
• Inspect vendor facilities, equipment, and manufacturing processes.
• Participate in proficiency sample testing and on-site certification inspections.
• Prepare and submit test results and inspection reports for review.
• Maintain, calibrate, and verify lab and field testing equipment.
• Assist in training new Materials Testing Technicians.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

About the Position

The Materials Testing Technician performs a variety of entry‑level quality‑assurance testing of construction materials used in transportation projects. Working primarily in a laboratory environment with field testing as needed, the Technician assists with materials testing, inspections, and data collection to support roadway and bridge construction and maintenance. This position follows established procedures, standards, and specifications to help ensure the quality and performance of materials. The Technician may also participate in internal materials evaluations and investigations, including the use of new equipment, emerging technologies, and innovative materials and treatments. This role offers hands‑on experience with advanced and emerging materials testing and nondestructive evaluation technologies.

• High school diploma or GED
• Post‑secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year‑for‑year basis

Other Requirements

• Must possess ATTI Soils & Aggregate certification or have the ability to obtain within six months of the hire date
• Must possess ACI Strength certification or have the ability to obtain within twelve months of the hire date
• Must possess ATTI Asphalt, ATTI Field, and Nuclear Gauge & Radiation Safety certifications or have the ability to obtain within eighteen months of the hire date
• Must possess ACI Field certification or have the ability to obtain within twenty‑four months of the hire date

Job Contributions

• Perform laboratory testing of construction materials used in assigned projects

Working Conditions

This position requires the employee to be in the office/field or customer‑facing for all hours worked
