Materials Technician

Description
As a Materials Technician at Impulse, you will play a crucial hands-on role in supporting our materials engineering team. This position is responsible for the preparation, testing, and basic processing of metallic and non-metallic materials used in our advanced applications.
Responsibilities
- Prepare material test specimens from both metallic and non-metallic raw materials using various methods including cutting, machining, mounting, grinding, and polishing according to specifications and standard procedures
- Perform a variety of materials tests, including but not limited to: tensile testing, hardness testing (Rockwell, Vickers, Knoop), metallographic preparation and microscopic examination, and potentially basic chemical analysis or non-destructive evaluation
- Operate and maintain laboratory testing equipment and learn to use new laboratory equipment as it is procured. Assist in setting up any new equipment
- Operate furnaces and environmental chambers to perform heat treatments and thermal exposures according to defined schedules and procedures
- Maintain laboratory organization, cleanliness, and safety protocols
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration checks on laboratory equipment
- Follow all safety guidelines and procedures for handling materials and operating equipment
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalency certificate
- 3+ years of demonstrated hands-on experience in a technical, laboratory, manufacturing, or workshop environment
- Mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools, power tools, and basic measurement devices (calipers, micrometers)
- Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, drawings, and instructions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
- Willingness to work safely with potentially hazardous materials and equipment
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 40 lbs
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 2+ years of direct experience preparing metallurgical or materials test specimens
- Demonstrated experience performing mechanical tests (tensile, hardness, etc.)
- Demonstrated experience with metallographic preparation and analysis
- Demonstrated experience operating heat treatment furnaces
- Demonstrated experience operating basic machine shop equipment (lathes, mills, band saws)
- Familiarity with ASTM or other relevant testing standards
- Demonstrated experience working in an aerospace, automotive, or R&D laboratory environment
- Demonstrated experience handling both metallic and non-metallic (polymers, composites, ceramics) materials
Additional Information:Compensation bands are determined by role, level, location, and alignment with market data. Individual level and base pay is determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on job-related skills, education, experience, technical capabilities and internal equity.
