Job summary

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Department of Transportation seeks a Materials Technician 1 to support testing and evaluation of materials used in transportation projects. You will prepare samples, conduct laboratory tests, and document results to ensure quality and safety of road materials.

You will gain hands-on lab experience, work 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday–Friday, with no telework option, contributing to statewide projects that impact public safety across Pennsylvania.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports the testing and evaluation of materials used in transportation projects by preparing samples and performing laboratory tests. You will help ensure that construction materials meet required standards for quality and safety. As a Materials Technician 1, you will perform the following duties:

  • Sample Preparation: Prepare material samples according to established testing procedures
  • Test Execution: Perform laboratory tests following American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Standards, American Society for Testing and Materials International, and the Pennsylvania Test Methods
  • Result Documentation: Record test findings with careful attention to accuracy and detail
  • Equipment Calibration: Verify that testing instruments are properly calibrated before use
  • Lab Cleanliness: Maintain clean workspaces and equipment to support a safe laboratory environment
Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year of experience as a Technical Assistant (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) ; or
  • One year of experience in the testing of materials used in highway, bridge, building, hydraulic or similar construction projects and graduation from high school ; or
  • An Associate's Degree in a civil engineering technology or closely related field ; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
