Job summary

Moseley Technical Services, Inc. is seeking a Materials & Processes Engineer specializing in adhesives, sealants, and elastomers for aerospace applications in Auburn, WA.

Qualifications

  • US Citizenship is required by federal law.
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically 3+ years of hands-on experience with adhesives, sealants, elastomers, rubber formulations, or polymer materials testing.
  • Experience performing adhesion testing, cure evaluation, rheological analysis, and mechanical testing of elastomeric materials.

Responsibilities

  • Formulate, optimize, and qualify sealants, structural and non-structural adhesives, elastomers, gaskets, and rubber compounds to meet performance requirements.
  • Define material specifications, acceptance criteria, and test methods for sealants and SAR materials.
  • Plan, perform, and interpret laboratory testing including adhesion testing, cure evaluation, rheology, and hardness testing.
  • Develop, validate, and maintain manufacturing processes including dispensing, priming, curing, bonding, and pot life controls.
  • Lead root cause investigations of adhesive and elastomer failures; implement CAPA.
  • Support manufacturing scale-up, production transfer, and training with work instructions and control plans.
  • Qualify and audit suppliers; review certificates of conformance and test reports.
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, aerospace outgassing, and D6 standards; maintain equipment and inventory.
  • Prepare reports and present findings to Design Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality teams.

Materials & Processes Engineer
Adhesives, Sealants, & Elastomers

We are seeking a Materials & Processes Engineer - Adhesives, Sealants & Elastomers (Aerospace) to develop, qualify, and support aerospace sealants, structural adhesives, elastomers, rubber compounds, and bonding processes for manufacturing and product applications. This role focuses on polymer materials engineering, laboratory testing, process development, supplier qualification, failure analysis, and manufacturing support while ensuring compliance with ASTM, aerospace, and industry standards.

Responsibilities
  • Formulate, optimize, and qualify sealants, structural and non-structural adhesives, elastomers, gaskets, and rubber compounds to meet application-specific performance requirements including adhesion, flexibility, environmental resistance, outgassing, and curing behavior.
  • Define material specifications, acceptance criteria, engineering standards, and laboratory test methods for sealants, adhesives, rubber (SAR) materials, and assemblies.
  • Plan, perform, and interpret laboratory testing including:
    • Lap shear and peel adhesion testing
    • Cure kinetics evaluation
    • Rheology and viscosity analysis
    • Shore A/D hardness testing
    • Tensile strength and elongation testing
    • Compression set evaluation
    • Fatigue and cyclic durability testing
    • Environmental exposure testing (temperature, humidity, UV)
    • Outgassing analysis
    • Chemical resistance testing
  • Develop, validate, and maintain manufacturing application processes including dispensing, priming, curing, bonding, and pot life controls.
  • Lead root cause investigations of adhesive, sealant, elastomer, and rubber failures; implement and monitor corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Support manufacturing scale-up, production transfer, and continuous improvement by developing work instructions, process control plans, manufacturing trials, and operator training.
  • Qualify and audit suppliers of raw materials, adhesives, sealants, and elastomeric components; review supplier certifications, test reports, and certificates of conformance.
  • Ensure compliance with ASTM, aerospace outgassing requirements, D6 standards, and other applicable industry and regulatory specifications.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment including rheometers, curing ovens, adhesion testers, and environmental chambers while managing laboratory inventory and consumables.
  • Prepare technical reports, qualification packages, engineering documentation, and test plans; present findings and recommendations to Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Production, and Supply Chain teams.
Qualifications
  • US Citizenship Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically 3+ years of hands‑on experience with adhesives, sealants, elastomers, rubber formulations, or polymer materials testing. Entry‑level candidates with applicable laboratory experience may also be considered.
  • Experience performing adhesion testing, cure evaluation, rheological analysis, and mechanical testing of elastomeric materials.
  • Knowledge of polymer materials, adhesive bonding, sealant technologies, elastomer performance, and laboratory qualification methods.
  • Experience supporting laboratory testing, manufacturing process development, or materials qualification activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience with structural adhesives, silicone sealants, polyurethane sealants, RTV silicones, anaerobic adhesives, epoxy systems, elastomer compounding, and advanced bonding technologies.
  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, automotive, or industrial sealing systems.
  • Experience with supplier qualification, manufacturing process validation, and production support.
  • Bachelor's degree with typically 5+ years of engineering experience, Master's degree with typically 3+ years of engineering experience, or PhD with engineering experience.
