Overview
The Materials Handler I works semi-independently in a fast-paced warehouse environment, receiving detailed supervision and guidance. Receives daily workload assignments from Project Manager and/or foreman. This individual assists with moving, packing, wrapping, inventory, and transport of household goods in a professional manner. He/she works collaboratively within a team.
Responsibilities
- Assist with moving, packing, wrapping, inventory, and storing of household goods and/or commercial equipment for residential and commercial customers.
- Wrap, pack, load, and unload household or commercial items; safely handle and secure fragile items during the moving process; assemble and disassemble furniture as needed.
- Receive household effects from transportation service providers via freight or long-haul moves.
- Unload household effects and general freight from delivery trucks via warehouse docks.
- Identify damaged, lost, or missing items and notify the Project Manager or warehouse foreman immediately.
- Exercise extreme care when handling each piece of personal effects.
- Wrap and pack household effects to prepare for long-term storage.
- Assemble and repair wood shipping crates, using a variety of electric and pneumatic powered hand tools, such as saws, drills, nail guns, etc.
- Perform manual lifting of furniture and other material during entire shift.
- Receive training on the safe operation of a variety of material handling equipment to include 6,000lb and 10,000lb capacity forklifts, mechanized floor sweeper, and scrubber.
- Assist with the movement of tractor-trailers and other commercial vehicles inside the warehouse.
- Ensure all safety procedures are being followed.
- Communicate effectively with team members to coordinate moving tasks; follow established safety guidelines to prevent accidents and damage to property.
- Maintain the warehouse facility and notify the project manager of any damages and/or maintenance issues.
- Maintain all government-furnished equipment. Forklift certification required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Possess a minimum of one year of verifiable experience in the transportation and commercial moving industry.
- Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with other crew members, clients, and commercial laborers.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background investigation and pre-employment drug test.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a PUBLIC TRUST clearance.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Have a basic working knowledge of the household moving/freight/transportation industry.
- Have the ability to clearly communicate (write, read, and speak) the English language.
- Have a physical fitness level that allows for prolonged standing and associated manual labor.
- Able to independently lift 80 pounds repeatedly and on a regular basis.
