Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory invites external candidates to apply for Research Technologist 1 or 2 in the Sigma Division. You will contribute to metallography and characterization tasks, performing sample prep, SEM/EDS analyses, and data interpretation in a safety‑minded environment.

You will mentor, develop techniques, and help meet nuclear and global security program deliverables while adhering to lab procedures and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination.
• Experience with metallography and sample preparation techniques.
• Ability to follow procedures, safety rules, and documentation.
• Must be able to collaborate with colleagues and external partners.
• Ability to obtain a Q clearance, US citizenship typically required.

Responsibilities

• Support operations and lab processes in the Sigma-2 lab.
• Cut, grind, mount, polish, and etch samples for microscopy.
• Prepare samples for SEM (EDS/EBSD/WDS) analysis.
• Characterize samples using optical microscopy and hardness testing.
• Analyze data and prepare charts for reports.
• Maintain compliance with safety, security, and environmental regs.
• Assist with equipment maintenance and waste profiling.
• Interact with facility personnel for equipment needs.
