Job summary

Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) is seeking a Materials Engineer to provide materials and process analysis across the lifecycle of drivetrain components, including welding and joining support. The role partners with R&D, Quality, Production, and Suppliers to push materials technology forward.

DTNA offers a competitive starting salary from $90,000 to $115,000 USD plus an annual bonus, generous vacation and holidays, 401k with company match, and comprehensive health benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science Engineering with 2–4 years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough understanding of welding, joining, and non-destructive testing techniques.
  • LSO certification or ability to become certified.
  • At least 1 year of experience with ferrous, copper, or aluminum alloys and their processing techniques.
  • At least 1 year of experience with SEM or other advanced microscopy techniques.
  • At least 1 year of experience using Optical Microscopy.
  • At least 1 year of experience in NDT techniques (MPI, dye penetrant, radiography, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Identify emerging technological developments in materials, materials characterization, and processing.
  • Provide material and process expertise to solve development and reliability concerns.
  • Perform material laboratory practices including sample prep, metallography, and mechanical testing.
  • Conduct failure analysis investigations for internal and external partners.
  • Analyze material processing such as joining, heat treatment, casting, and forging for conformance to standards.
  • Interpret material specifications for powertrain components and drive improvements with partners.
  • Collaborate across regions and business units and communicate complex technical information.
  • Support welding processes including electron beam, laser, and manual welding operations.

Inside the Role

The Material and Process Technology (MPT) department at DTNA is looking for a Materials Engineer to join our team to help fulfill our mission to push the boundaries of materials and chemistry and redefine what is possible. The MPT Materials Engineer is responsible for providing material and process analysis expertise throughout the product lifecycle of traditional and advanced drivetrain components, as well as welding and joining support. The MPT Materials Engineer works closely with internal business partners, such as Research and Development, Quality Management, Production, Manufacturing Engineering, and Supplier Management. MPT adds value to our customers from ideation through end of life to ensure Daimler Truck fulfills its mission to keep the world moving.

What You Drive at DTNA
  • Identify emerging technological developments in the world of materials, materials characterization, and material processing (including welding and joining).
  • Provide material and materials process expertise for internal and external partners to solve materials process development, component development, and reliability concerns.
  • Demonstrated expertise in standard materials laboratory practices such as sample preparation, metallography, materials characterization, and mechanical property testing.
  • Perform failure analysis investigations to support internal and external partners.
  • Perform material process analyses, such as material joining, heat treatment, casting, and forging, of internal and external partners to ensure adherence to internal and external standards, and/or solve development or reliability concerns.
  • Interpret material specifications and requirements as they apply to Daimler Truck powertrain components.
  • Identify opportunities and drive improvements for both internal and external partners.
  • Value global collaboration and encourage global colleagues to engage in knowledge sharing across multiple regions and business units.
  • Recognizes cultural differences in a global environment and effectively collaborates within this diverse environment.
  • Must have the ability to effectively communicate detailed technical facts and concepts through both written and verbal communication with global internal and external partners.
  • Laser Safety Officer for 3 million sqf. heavy duty automotive machining and assembly facility
  • Weld quality and welding process support for various in-house processes including electron beam, laser, and manual welding operations
Knowledge You Should Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Material Science Engineering, or related field with 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Thorough understanding of welding, joining, and non-destructive testing techniques
  • LSO Certification for Laser Safety or the ability to become certified
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with ferrous, copper, or aluminum alloys and their processing techniques
  • Minimum 1 year of Experience with Scanning Electron Microscopy or other advanced microscopy techniques
  • Minimum 1 year of experience using Optical Microscopy
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in Non-Destructive Testing techniques (MPI, Dye penetrant, radiography, etc.)
Exceptional Candidates Might Have
  • Knowledge of 8D, Shainin Red X, or other advanced problems solving techniques
  • Experience with AWS and ISO Joining specifications
  • Ability to recognize cultural differences in a global environment and effectively collaborate
  • Ability to speak German, or Spanish
  • Familiarity with automotive PPAP
  • Ability to provide cross-functional leadership across diverse working teams
  • Experience with failure analysis methodologies
  • Demonstrated supplier development experience
  • Experience with stainless steels.
  • Experience with Electron Beam and Laser welding equipment and techniques
