Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking a Lead Materials & Process Engineer in Baltimore to mentor a team, steer material and process initiatives, and ensure compliance with industry standards. You will recruit and develop engineers, prioritize diverse workloads, and collaborate across Quality, Production, Design Engineering, and Supply Chain.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • 6+ years of experience in materials engineering, composite engineering, manufacturing engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with composite material systems, testing (physical, chemical, mechanical), and manufacturing processes.
  • Prior leadership experience strongly preferred, including mentoring or managing engineering staff.
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with specification development and material qualification.
  • Ability to integrate across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supply chain functions.
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and ability to present technical content to stakeholders.
  • Highly organized with strong sense of urgency and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Materials & Process Engineers.
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and coach new engineers.
  • Prioritize workload across production support, qualification tasks, and R&D projects.
  • Oversee material and process engineering support for active production.
  • Ensure compliance with internal specs, customer requirements, and industry standards.
  • Provide direction on material approvals, deviations, and corrective actions.
  • Drive process improvements to increase robustness and reduce variability.
  • Guide new material development projects including testing and prototyping.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Production, Design Engineering, Supply Chain, and external partners.
  • Assess and mitigate risks with new materials and production changes.

Job description

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Materials & Process Engineers supporting both production programs and R&D / demonstrator development
  • Recruit, onboard, train, and coach new engineers, fostering technical growth and cross‑functional collaboration
  • Prioritize workload across production support, qualification/approval tasks, R&D projects, and demonstrator milestones
  • Oversee material and process engineering support for active production, including composite materials, adhesives, coatings, and metallic processes
  • Ensure compliance with internal specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards
  • Provide direction on material approvals, deviations, MRB dispositions, and corrective actions
  • Drive process improvements to increase robustness, reduce variability, and support cost-out initiatives
  • Guide new material development projects, including testing, prototyping, and early application of advanced composite systems
  • Collaborate closely with Quality, Production, Design Engineering, Supply Chain, and external research partners
  • Assess, manage, and mitigate risks associated with new materials, process changes, and production disruptions
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
