Job summary

Jobtailor in Idaho is seeking a lead R&D engineer to drive ceramic matrix composite projects, from material selection to performance evaluation in hypersonic environments.

You will design experimental protocols, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams on multi-year development plans while producing technical reports and proposals for stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or materials engineering required.
  • 5+ years of experience in composites engineering with focus on high-temperature materials.
  • Proven track record leading R&D projects, preferably government-funded.
  • Experience with material characterization techniques (thermal, mechanical, microstructural, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and technical writing for proposals and reports.
  • Ability to mentor junior team members and work independently.
  • Strong background in statistics and problem-solving techniques.

Job description

  • Lead R&D projects focused on ceramic matrix composite preforms, including material selection, processing, characterization, and performance evaluation for hypersonic environments
  • Design and implement experimental protocols for testing and validating new materials and processes
  • Design parts with optimized ply schedules and architectures based on densification methods
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams (mechanical, process, software, controls) to execute multi-year product development plans
  • Prepare technical reports, proposals, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Stay current with industry trends and emerging technologies in high-temperature composites and hypersonic systems
  • Ensure compliance with project requirements and safety standards throughout the research process.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical or materials engineering or a related engineering discipline required
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field desired
  • 5+ years of experience in composites engineering, with a strong focus on high-temperature materials
  • Proven track record in leading R&D projects, preferably funded by government grants
  • Experience with material characterization techniques (thermal, mechanical, microstructural, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills for proposal development, report writing, and presentations
  • Ability to work independently and mentor junior team members
  • Strong background in statistics and problem‑solving techniques.
