Job summary

NORDAM in Tulsa, OK is seeking an experienced Materials Engineer to apply advanced knowledge of materials and processes in aerospace manufacturing. You will evaluate design objectives, select materials, and support cost and performance targets.

You will plan laboratory operations, conduct tests on chemicals, fuels, and processes, and work with multidisciplinary teams to resolve testing issues and ensure quality. A Bachelor's degree and PE preferred, with 6 years related experience.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 Year / Bachelor's degree required.
  • Professional Engineer certificate preferred.
  • Combination of experience and training may substitute for the education requirement.

Responsibilities

  • Develops solutions to moderate scope problems in materials, equipment or processes for aerospace products.
  • Reviews plans for new products; evaluates strength, weight and cost for material selection.
  • Plans lab operations; develops material fabrication procedures for new materials.
  • Uses software/hardware to conduct tests on chemicals, fuels and processes.
  • Monitors tests; resolves testing problems with technical teams.
  • Reviews failure data and conducts material/process failure analyses.
  • Writes specs to control material properties and manufacturing/repair processes.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job description

Applies advanced knowledge of principles, theories, concepts and industry practices and standards in materials and process engineering to evaluate technical and economic factors and recommend engineering and manufacturing actions for attainment of design objectives of processes or products in a manufacturing environment.

Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities
  • Develops solutions to a variety of problems of moderate scope and complexity requiring judgment and ingenuity to modify procedures and approaches within current policies and practices related to applications of materials, equipment or processes in the manufacturing, rework and repair of aerospace products.
  • Reviews plans for new product and factors such as strength, weight, and cost to submit material selection recommendations ensuring attainment of design objectives. Confers with producers of materials such as metals, ceramics, or polymers during investigation and evaluation of materials suitable for specific product applications.
  • Assists in planning and implementing laboratory operations to develop material and fabrication procedures for new materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards. Develops or uses computer software and hardware to conduct tests on chemicals, fuels, and processes.
  • Monitor and assist in directing and controlling operational, functional, and performance phases of tests. Confers with scientific, engineering, and technical personnel to resolve testing problems such as product or system malfunctions, incomplete test data and data interpretation.
  • Reviews product failure data and interprets laboratory tests and analyses to establish or rule out material and process causes. Examines composite and metal material samples, components and parts using nondestructive and destructive inspection technology to detect delaminations, internal abnormalities, impurities and failure analysis of materials.
  • Develops and writes technical specifications to control material properties and manufacturing or repair processes. Specifies procedures for cutting, shaping, and otherwise preparing the basic material considering product specifications, economic and producability factors.

Performs other duties as required. These duties may include assignments in job classifications and departments other than the primary assignment.

Education Requirements

Minimum 4 Year / Bachelors Degree.

Preferred Other. Professional Engineer Certificate.

If applicable, a combination of experience and training may be substituted for the education requirement.

Experience Requirements

6 year(s) Related experience and/or training.

Skills and Competencies
  • Communicates effectively using electronic media and in written and verbal forms.
  • Makes telephone and direct personal contact with internal and external personnel and makes formal presentations to small or large groups.
  • Operates standard office equipment and demonstrates competence in the use of standard software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
