Position Information

The Pharr District is seeking a motivated Material/Process Inspector III or IV to join our Laboratory team. This position plays an important role in ensuring the quality of materials used in the construction and maintenance of Texas highways by performing laboratory testing and inspections on materials such as aggregates, flexible base, embankment, and concrete. The successful candidate will help verify compliance with TxDOT specifications, contributing to the safety, quality, and longevity of the state's transportation infrastructure.
We are looking for a proactive professional who can communicate effectively with contractors, suppliers, project personnel, and other stakeholders regarding test results, material compliance, and daily operational issues. Salary Range:
Material/Process Inspector III (B20): $66,000 - $81,351/annually
$5,500 - $6,779.25/monthly
Material/Process Inspector IV (B21): $69,600 - $87,046/annually
$5,800 - $7,253.83/monthly

Material/Process Inspector III
Performs complex material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Material/Process Inspector IV
Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Trains others and May Serve as Lead worker. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

• Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspections.
• Keeps equipment mileage and service records and schedules equipment repairs.
• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
• Performs tests and inspection duties.
• Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
• Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

The essential duties for the Material/Process Inspector IV include:

• Analyzes procedures to identify deficiencies and recommends improvements to management
• Conducts safety and/or employee forum meetings.
• Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
• Observes tests and inspections and reviews reports from other inspectors; performs quality assurance for tests and inspections.
• Trains and assists other inspectors and private sector employees and provides project specification information.
• Drives/travels to laboratories, manufacturing plants, points of supply, warehouses and project sites to monitor status of programs, meet with supervisors and managers to resolve problems and perform unannounced inspection of operations.
• Handles problem calls from producers, plant inspectors and construction project field personnel.
• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
• Maintains and calibrates equipment.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Education: Material/Process Inspector III or IV: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience:
Material/Process Inspector III: 2 years of experience in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.*
Material/Process Inspector IV: 3 years in laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related work.*
