Position Information

TxDOT's Lubbock DistrictLubbock Area Officeis looking for someone to join our team of inspectors who ensure that TxDOT is constructing high-quality, long-lasting roads for the residents of Lubbock County in Texas. You will work in a close-knit, team-based atmosphere that is fast-paced and includes a variety of different sized construction projects. This position primarily involves outdoor work where you will interact with contractor personnel, inspectors, and Project Managers/Engineers to resolve construction deficiencies and ensure that the materials used to build our roads meet TxDOT's specifications through sampling and testing in our on-site laboratory.

Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.

• Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.
• Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.
• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
• Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office.
• Performs tests and inspection duties.
• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
• Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
• Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.
• Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.
• Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.
• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.
• Maintains inventory of test supplies.
• Performs tests and inspection duties.
• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.
• Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

Materials Inspector I: No experience required (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Materials Inspector II: 1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation
• Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia
• Works in narrow aisles or passageways
• Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
• This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
