Performs material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties

Materials Inspector I

• Conducts nuclear density tests on subgrade, base and asphaltic concrete pavement.


• Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors and material producers and suppliers.


• Investigates compaction problems associated with hot mix asphaltic concrete.


• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.


• Maintains field record books for each construction project within assigned area office.


• Performs tests and inspection duties.


• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.


• Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.


• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Materials Inspector II

• Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors.


• Prepares and maintains inspection or test reports and issues material reports.


• Reviews plans and material specifications for changes in material requirements.


• Maintains a diary of inspection or test details.


• Maintains inventory of test supplies.


• Performs tests and inspection duties.


• Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement.


• Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.


• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience

Materials Inspector I

No experience required (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Materials Inspector II

1 YEAR Laboratory work, material inspection or other eng-related work (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation


• Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids


• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device


• Works frequently in small/crawl spaces; manholes; areas that can cause claustrophobia


• Works in narrow aisles or passageways


• Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools


• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs


• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

Position Information

TxDOT's Lubbock District Lubbock Area Office is looking for someone to join our team of inspectors who ensure that TxDOT is constructing high-quality, long-lasting roads for the residents of Lubbock County in Texas. You will work in a close-knit, team-based atmosphere that is fast-paced and includes a variety of different sized construction projects. This position primarily involves outdoor work where you will interact with contractor personnel, inspectors, and Project Managers/Engineers to resolve construction deficiencies and ensure that the materials used to build our roads meet TxDOT's specifications through sampling and testing in our on-site laboratory.
