Position Information

TxDOT's Fort Worth District is looking for one (1) Maintenance Inspector III or IV (Transportation Maintenance Tech III or IV) based in Cleburne, TX.

As a Maintenance Inspector, you’ll serve as a field leader overseeing complex maintenance and construction activities, ensuring contractors meet safety requirements, plans, specifications, laws, regulations, and department standards. You’ll inspect roadway and pavement projects, evaluate materials and workmanship, monitor traffic control and lane closures, review construction plans and documentation, and maintain accurate project records. You’ll also operate specialized data-collection and heavy equipment, identify solutions to challenging maintenance issues, and lead inspection activities for medium‑to‑large projects or multiple smaller projects. Whether coordinating with contractors and law enforcement, responding to emergencies, evaluating pavement conditions, or training fellow employees, you’ll bring sound judgment, technical knowledge, and a commitment to public safety to every assignment. Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: contract maintenance and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

• Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding.
• Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
• Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic
• Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results
• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards
• Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
• Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
• Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
• Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned

Maintenance Inspector IV:

Performs advanced transportation operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance contract inspection and material and process inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Additional Essential Duties including Maintenance Inspector III:

• Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures.
• Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.
• Serves as project leader responsible for maintenance construction inspection activities for a medium to large maintenance construction project or for several small projects.
• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
• Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.

Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.

• Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Maintenance Inspector III and IV: None in formal education.

Experience:

Maintenance Inspector III: 2 years of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent) Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Licenses and Certifications Maintenance Inspector III and VI:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

• Surveying/mapping methods, materials and publication procedures
• Applicable surveying procedures, standards, and instruments

Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes

• Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external
