Job summary

Shintech Louisiana is seeking a Material Handling Technician to monitor, operate and maintain equipment in the storage and distribution of chemical products. The role supports safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant plant operations.

You will work 12-hour rotating shifts, perform rounds, collect samples, track logs, respond to alarms, and ensure regulatory compliance while upholding quality standards and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree preferred.
  • 2+ years in chemical, petrochemical, or industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with powered industrial trucks and/or cranes preferred.
  • Strong understanding of chemical processes, instrumentation, and DCS.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, manuals, and SDS.
  • Proficient with Word and Excel; excellent problem-solving and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor tank farm and processing equipment (tanks, pumps, valves).
  • Adjust process variables to maintain production conditions.
  • Perform rounds to inspect equipment and areas.
  • Collect samples and record data; maintain logs and reports.
  • Respond to alarms and troubleshoot issues; escalate when needed.
  • Follow SOPs, safety protocols, and regulations; read CFR.
  • Issue safe work permits with hazard communication to teams.

  • Operate and monitor chemical tank farm and processing equipment such as storage tanks, pumps, compressors, strainers, and control valves.
  • Adjust process variables (pressure, flow rates, set values, etc.) to maintain optimal production conditions.
  • Make regular rounds to inspect equipment and process areas.
  • Collect samples to ensure product quality and process efficiency.
  • Record operational data and maintain accurate logs and reports.
  • Respond to alarms, troubleshoot process issues, and elevate problems as needed.
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and environmental regulations.
  • Read and interpret Code of Federal Regulation.
  • Maintain quality objectives through responsible operating practices.
  • Issue safe work permits by identifying and communicating process hazards along with mitigation plans to maintenance and contract craftsmen.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications And Experience
  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or higher in Process Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in a chemical, petrochemical, or industrial manufacturing environment required; marine, rail, or truck loading experience preferred
  • Experience with powered industrial trucks and/or cranes preferred
  • Strong understanding of chemical processes, instrumentation, and distributed control systems (DCS)
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, technical manuals, and safety data sheets (SDS)
  • Proficient with software such as Microsoft Word & Excel
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Regularly required to push, pull, bend and perform long periods of standing and walking on cement foundations.
  • Occasionally required to stoop and kneel.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to coordinate the movement of eyes, hands, feet, and fingers to operate tools and equipment.
  • Required to be medically certified for respirator and medically fit for duty.
  • Use of PPE required in specific areas.
  • Willing and able to work 12 hour rotating shifts and overtime as required. This includes nights, weekends and holidays.
Work Environment
  • Chemical manufacturing facility, in presence of chemicals.
  • Occasionally work in tight or closed-in spaces.
  • Work outdoors, in sometimes inclement weather.
  • Moderate noise-level and environmental vibration related to equipment.
