The University of Akron is seeking a delivery-focused employee in Akron, OH to transport mail and packages, deliver to campus locations, and handle special deliveries. You will operate forklifts and delivery vehicles, load/unload items, and ensure safe, efficient handling following campus procedures.
Requires a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license, with at least six months in delivery roles.
45% Provides transportation for mail and packages from off campus areas and delivers sorted mail, freight or packages to appropriate campus locations. Provides special delivery services for packages, processes return receipts for deliveries, obtains signatures as necessary, and follows specific delivery instructions given by university personnel. 20% Performs other daily services such as OfficeMax, ChemStores, Book Deliveries, Office Supplies and UPS/FedEx deliveries. Picks up and delivers all chemicals on campus. Operates forklift, box truck with lift gate, and van. 10% Establishes daily delivery schedules while sorting, labeling, and organizing items to be delivered. Develops and coordinates a delivery plan for mail and/or completed jobs from various departments. 15% Operates transportation vehicles and delivery equipment while maintaining an orderly work environment. Loads and unloads material on or off pallets, skids or lifting device on to a vehicle. 5% Verifies and signs for mail, postal packages, and other delivered items. Responds to phone calls, inquiries, and requests for delivery services while waiting on walk-in customers. Provides instructions and assistance to other employees and performs problem solving techniques as necessary. 5% Prepares special deliveries by weighing and recording items, processing mailings, tying/bundling packages and mail, and processing deliveries. Assists in transporting money deposits and cash transactions when necessary.
Valid Driver's License.
Requires a minimum of six months experience and/or on the job training in delivery services. Strong communication skills and a general knowledge of postal/delivery procedures required. Some experience delivering heavy materials and supplies preferred. Ability to operate forklift, box truck with lift gate and van. Strong customer service and problem-solving skills required. Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and related software packages are required. Knowledge of the campus layout and department locations preferred.

Responsible for directing and monitoring the work of student and/or temporary workers.
Moderate physical effort required involving long periods of standing, walking on rough surfaces, bending and/or stooping; periodic lifting of moderately heavy items (over 50lbs. -- 75 lbs.).
Occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperatures and air conditions. May involve occasional exposure to dust, fumes, or outside weather conditions, and/or frequent driving of a vehicle (50% or more of the time).
Hourly wage is $15.30. This is a Union position with a salary Grade of SBU-108. Salary determination is subject to the SBU Collective Bargaining Agreement.
