Job summary

General Dynamics Electric Boat seeks Material Handlers to support Columbia Class programs in the South Yard Assembly Building. Responsibilities include receipt, movement, storage, and logistics of materials, plus verification of markings and packaging for outbound shipments.

Candidates should have a strong work ethic, be detail-oriented, and able to operate carts, pallet trucks, and electric stackers in a fast-paced industrial setting. Familiarity with EWP and Electric Boat systems is preferred.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED or 2+ years relevant technical experience.
  • Less than 5 years of experience in material handling functions, use of hand and pallet trucks, and in the protection of shipboard material.
  • Must be available for all shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Move shipboard and non-shipboard material within the South Yard Assembly Building using carts, pallet trucks, electric stackers, etc.
  • Receive incoming material, verify and document material markings.
  • Inventory and store material within South Yard Assembly Building buffers.
  • Perform material movement transactions on computers using EWP systems.
  • Package and protect outbound material for ship-out and store it in Electric Boat warehouses.
  • Coordinate deliveries and ship-out with transportation departments.
  • Perform basic rigging to move material using cranes as needed.
  • Remove pallets and other shipping materials from the area.

Job description

General Dynamics Electric Boat is seeking to hire Material Handlers in order to support meeting the needs of company growth driven by the Columbia Class Submarine Program within the South Yard Assembly Building. The Material Handlers will be responsible for the receipt, movement, storage and logistics of shipboard as well as non-shipboard material within the South Yard Assembly Building. The Material Handlers will also be responsible for verification and recording of markings on delivered material as well as packaging/ship-out of outgoing material.

The selected individuals must have a strong work ethic, be detail oriented and possess a background of having worked in a fast-paced, dynamic industrial environment utilizing a variety of equipment such as carts, pallet trucks and electric stackers. The selected individuals must also have a background in Electric Boat business systems such as Electronic Desktop, Electronic Work Package (EWP), and must have an understanding of material control/protection policies, procedures and best practices utilized within the Groton Shipyard. Experience in the handling and protection of Special Emphasis and Level 1 material is expected.

Responsibilities
  • Movement of shipboard as well as non-shipboard material within the South Yard Assembly Building utilizing carts, pallet trucks, electric stackers, etc.

  • Perform basic rigging functions to move material using cranes as needed
  • Removal of combustible materials such as pallets and other shipping materials from within the South Yard Assembly Building
Qualifications
Required:
  • High school graduate or GED or 2+ years relevant technical experience
  • Less than 5 years of experience in material handling functions, use of hand and pallet trucks, and in the protection of shipboard material.
  • Must be available for all shifts.
Preferred
  • Rigging experience with jib and boom cranes
  • Competence in blueprint reading
Skills
  • Ability to physically parts and material weighing up to 40 pounds as well as push or pull pallet trucks and carts
  • Ability to qualify for electric walking stacker operation and for basic rigging qualifications
  • Ability follow written instructions and procedures and pay attention to details, including verbatim transcription of material identification markings
  • Must be computer literate
  • Should be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Must be able to use hand and portable power tools
