Job Description
Job Purpose

The Material Handler / Chemical Shipping Specialist is responsible for the safe receipt, storage, handling, packaging, documentation, and shipment of raw materials, chemicals, finished goods, and related inventory. This position ensures compliance with company policies, DOT, IATA, OSHA, EPA, and other applicable regulations governing the transportation and handling of hazardous materials. The role supports manufacturing operations by maintaining accurate inventory records, preparing shipments, and ensuring materials are available when required.

Responsibilities

As a member of the Materials Team, you will be responsible for supporting manufacturing and customer delivery requirements through effective inventory control, material movement, and shipping activities. Special emphasis is placed on the proper handling, packaging, labeling, documentation, and transportation of chemicals and hazardous materials.

The successful candidate will maintain regulatory compliance while ensuring on-time delivery performance and inventory accuracy. This role requires attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to safety.

Duties
Position-Specific Responsibilities
  • Receive, inspect, verify, and process incoming materials and chemicals.
  • Store materials in designated locations in accordance with established procedures and safety requirements.
  • Pick, stage, and deliver materials to production areas as required.
  • Prepare domestic and international shipments in compliance with applicable shipping regulations.
  • Package hazardous and non-hazardous materials according to DOT, IATA, IMDG, and company requirements.
  • Create and maintain shipping documentation including bills of lading, packing lists, export documentation, hazard declarations, and safety records.
  • Verify proper labeling and marking of chemical shipments.
  • Maintain inventory accuracy through material transactions and cycle counting activities.
  • Operate material handling equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, and other warehouse equipment.
  • Coordinate with production, purchasing, quality, and customer service personnel to ensure material availability and shipment readiness.
  • Monitor inventory levels and communicate shortages or discrepancies.
  • Follow all environmental, health, and safety procedures related to hazardous materials handling.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensure proper chemical storage requirements are followed.
  • Support waste management and chemical disposal activities in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on shipping efficiency, inventory accuracy, and workplace safety.
  • Maintain clean and organized warehouse and shipping areas.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of shipping, receiving, warehouse, or material handling experience preferred.
  • Experience handling chemicals or hazardous materials preferred.
  • Knowledge of DOT hazardous material shipping regulations required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain hazardous materials shipping certification.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems, inventory transactions, and shipping software.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Ability to safely operate warehouse equipment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, and other protective devices as required.
  • Ability to work in warehouse, manufacturing, and shipping environments.
Working Conditions
  • Exposure to manufacturing and warehouse environments.
  • Regular handling of chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • May require specialized training and certification for hazardous material shipping.
  • Occasional overtime may be required to support business needs.
