Job Summary

The Material Handler must be familiar with all areas of the fork truck driving procedures for safely loading and unloading trucks to maintain efficient, safe operations. The Material Handler is responsible for all order picking, order verification and loading of customer or carriers' vehicle in a safe manner. The ideal candidate thrives in environments where safety, quality, service and cost are the highest priorities.

Essential Duties
  • Practices incident and accident prevention, demonstrating safe behavior in all activities.
  • Obtains and maintains fork-truck certification by attending in-house training, and completes daily fork truck check sheets.
  • Replaces the forklift’s liquefied propane gas (LP) tanks.
  • Troubleshoots work related issues and communicates issues with maintenance, Shipper/Receiver, and Logistics Planner.
  • Works safely, and is responsible for housekeeping in his/her work areas at all times.
  • Prioritizes work assignments by meeting with Logistics Planner, Shipper/Receiver, and Logistics Supervisor every morning and throughout the day.
  • Drives the fork truck safely through the warehouse mindful of pedestrian traffic at all times.
  • Participate in Cycle Counting events when needed, able to adjust schedule to meet inventory deadlines.
  • Ships according to FIFO principles on all items in the warehouse to ensure shelf-life efficacy.
  • Prepares product for shipping by reviewing the packing slip, hand picking the product and assembling the pallet.
  • Arranges material on flatbeds according to weight restrictions and driver input when loading.
  • Ensures correct product delivery by reviewing packing slip and product on truck.
  • Verifies product quantity for shipment and receiving by counting and signing Picking Slip and Bill of Lading.
  • Learns safety hazards and job procedures by reading and understanding Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
  • Learns software programs by reading and understanding manuals and procedures.
  • Suggests improvements in work methods and procedures by communicating to Logistics Supervisor.
  • Works safely when loading and unloading van trailers; uses dock locks and chocks to hold trailer steady when going in and out.
  • Voluntarily learns hazardous material safety for spills and transporting material; earns HAZMAT certification and keeps current.
  • Obtains and maintains forklift certification by attending in house training.
  • Troubleshoots and communicates any work related issues with Logistics Supervisor, Manager of Manufacturing Technology, and/or Maintenance if needed.
  • Performs other duties as instructed by the Logistics Supervisor.
  • Daily review of email and department communication; maintains a good attendance record.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with all plant employees and other business contacts.
  • Uses process improvement tools to drive continuous improvement of the plant and business processes.
  • Follow and document Hazardous Materials Transportation Guidelines for all shipments.
  • Observe what needs to be done and take initiative to perform this work.
Qualifications
  • Required: H.S. Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
  • 2 years’ experience in a fast paced, logistics manufacturing environment.
  • Preferred: Experience supporting logistics, customer care and business goals.
  • Required: Ability to work all shifts including occasional nights and weekends.
  • General Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to work as a team player; Ability to respond to requests in a professional and timely manner; Demonstrated intermediate communication and interpersonal skills; Strong planning, prioritization, organizational and reporting skills; Independent problem‑solving skills; A demonstrated commitment to safety; Highly self‑motivated; Ability to work well unsupervised, while producing quality results; Ability to work well and communicate well with other GAF employees, at all levels in the organization.
  • Technical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to troubleshoot and solve logistics, carrier and customer challenges; Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, other); Familiar with standard warehouse concepts, practices and procedures; Experience in fast‑paced warehouse environment and safe fork truck operation.

Base Salary

Base Hourly Rate: $26.08
