Title: Master Technician

Reporting To: Service Manager

Employment Classification: Non-exempt / Hourly

General Summary

The Flat Rate Technician (Tech) lives VIP’s mission to EARN AUTOMOTIVE CUSTOMERS FOR LIFE by learning and living the VIP culture and following VIP processes to ensure that customers get a different & better experience. The Tech must work effectively and safely to ensure good communication, teamwork, and operation in serving customers. The Tech is responsible for effective diagnosis of automotive systems, repair and replacement of automotive parts, fluids, tires, and accessories, and ensuring these services are done right the first time. The Tech is expected to comply with company safety, loss prevention, and customer service programs, as well as established policies, procedures, and regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Makes sure that workplace safety is Priority #1. Follows all safety policies, completes all safety-related training, locks out any unsafe equipment, and reports any unsafe conditions or actions to management.
2. Provides automotive systems diagnosis, repair, and maintenance services for customers, including all systems covered by ASE certifications such as Engine Repair, Transmission, Suspension, Brakes, Electrical Systems, Heating & Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance.
3. Ensures a valid Service Work Order is initiated prior to service and is visibly displayed with the vehicle during service.
4. Completes all required training and certification, including becoming a Licensed State Vehicle Inspector, T.I.A certifications, and ASE certifications based on position.
5. Supports customer education through the 5-for-5 process and participates in meetings and training sessions.
6. Performs safety checks and road tests vehicles post-service to ensure safe operation.
7. Maintains a clean and organized work environment, including shop equipment and facility appearance.
8. Enforces compliance with safety, environmental, and ethical standards.
9. Participates in team meetings and ensures shop operations meet safety and quality standards.
10. Maintains technical skills and certifications to ensure safe and effective service delivery.
11. Adheres to work schedule, arriving on time and working scheduled hours.
12. Performs other duties as required to support shop operations and customer satisfaction.

Performance Measurement

• Maintain minimum 50% productivity, measured as billed hours over worked hours.
• Ensure minimal rework or callbacks by performing quality work the first time.

Qualifications

• Minimum of one year of automotive service experience or completion of a technical program.
• Valid driver’s license in the state of residence.
• ASE certifications (G1, A4, A5 preferred or as required for the position).
• State Inspection License (if applicable).
• Ability to interpret technical instructions and communicate effectively with customers and team members.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

The work is performed indoors in a shop environment with exposure to weather, chemicals, noise, and mechanical hazards. Physical activities include standing, reaching, lifting, and operating tools and equipment, with safety gear worn as required.
