The Master Mechanic Heating/Air Conditioning (HVAC) is responsible for installing, maintaining, repairing, and modifying HVAC and refrigeration systems in city buildings and facilities. This position ensures all work complies with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and environmental standards. The role includes overseeing outside contractors, training staff, and serving as a lead worker on HVAC-related tasks.
A Day In The Life
Installation, Maintenance, and Repair
- Install, service, and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, including boilers, chillers, pumps, fans, and related equipment.
- Perform regular inspections to identify and diagnose issues, ensuring optimal system performance. Troubleshoot malfunctions in compressors, electrical controls, condensers, and other HVAC components.
- Conduct minor electrical repairs and maintenance in city facilities. Assist in general building maintenance tasks as needed.
System Operations and Adjustments
- Operate and adjust boilers, circulating pumps, chillers, and other HVAC systems to ensure efficient operation.
- Maintain and modify centralized HVAC control systems, including software adjustments and programming corrections.
- Charge air conditioning systems with refrigerants, check for leaks, set controls, and maintain logs in compliance with EPA Clean Air Act standards.
Safety and Compliance
- Safely handle hazardous materials, including refrigerants, and ensure proper disposal.
- Follow all applicable safety protocols and practices in the maintenance and repair of HVAC systems.
- Ensure compliance with EPA Clean Air Act standards regarding refrigerant management.
Supervision, Training, and Oversight
- Provide guidance, instruction, and training to other employees.
- Oversee and inspect work performed by outside contractors to ensure compliance with specifications and standards.
- Project Estimation and Inventory Management
Estimate time, materials, and costs for repair and maintenance tasks.
- Maintain inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment needed for HVAC work.
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Safely operate department equipment, including trucks, trenchers, backhoes, and bucket trucks.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of workspaces and equipment.
What You Will Need For Success
- A high school diploma or GED is required. Successful completion of a recognized apprenticeship or technical training program in HVAC.
- A minimum of five years of experience in HVAC installation, maintenance and repair.
- Valid EPA Refrigerant handling certification. This employee must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
