Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University’s Facilities Management is seeking a Commercial HVAC Technician to support Facilities Operations.

Responsibilities include preventive maintenance, repair and installation of building HVAC systems across campus while delivering reliable, customer-focused service to faculty, staff and students.

Qualifications

  • Several years of experience in commercial/institutional HVAC and mechanical maintenance.
  • Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide variety of HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees and customers.
  • Knowledge of applicable building codes.
  • Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications and scopes.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment.
  • State of Virginia Driver's License required.
  • Universal EPA Certification.
  • State of Virginia Journeyman HVAC License required or the ability to obtain within the first year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of HVAC and mechanical systems.
  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of plumbing and mechanical systems.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, AHUs, rooftops, chillers and controls.
  • Work collaboratively with staff to deliver reliable service and support the university mission.
  • Monitor work of contractors to ensure compliance with specs and codes.
  • On-call work during inclement weather and emergencies; participate in rotating on-call schedule.
  • Utilize AiM for time entry and work order updates; organize shop area and materials.

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hireCommercial HVAC Technicians for Facilities Operations.


Commercial HVAC Technician


  • Utilizes knowledge of the HVAC trade to perform preventive maintenance, repair, and installation of building infrastructure ensuring efficient operation of Zone facilities

  • Provides exemplary customer service to all faculty, staff and students supporting University’s mission of teaching, high‑impact research and creative expression

  • Identifies and documents system deficiencies using diagnostic tools and advises management of tasks requiring priority attention

  • Provides quality workmanship and service to maximize system availability and minimize unscheduled downtime


Responsibilities include (but are not limited to)

Reactive/Service Work


  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of various building infrastructure, such as air handling units, fan coil units, roof top equipment, heat pumps, cooling towers, chillers, terminal boxes, refrigeration systems, air compressors, pumps and other HVAC equipment using specialized knowledge of HVAC theory and practice

  • Independently respond to service requests requiring diagnosis and repair of plumbing, and mechanical systems


Preventive Maintenance


  • Independently perform and complete regularly scheduled preventive maintenance to various mechanical building infrastructure, such as pumps, air handling units, roof top units, heat exchangers, vacuum systems, motors, fans, cooling towers, chillers, electronic and pneumatic controls, radiators and other HVAC equipment


Customer Service/Teamwork


  • Works in a collaborative and collegial manner throughout the department, division and University

  • Interact with others to collectively resolve problems, accomplish mutual goals, and foster an atmosphere of trust

  • Share information and ideas to improve customer service and promote Facilities Management’s goals

  • Listens to and anticipates customer needs; provides clear explanations; responds quickly; takes initiative to assist internal and external customers

  • Communicates respectfully to internal and external customers; appreciates diversity and respects differences


Communication and Monitoring Work of Others


  • Advise supervision and or management by recommending equipment maintenance tasks and identifying equipment needing priority attention

  • Communicate orally and in writing regarding work schedules, system problems, estimated completion times and effects of system problems on occupant safety and comfort

  • Work with lesser skilled team members in the various techniques of the trades to increase their skill level and ability to work independently

  • Use trade knowledge to monitor work of contractors to assure compliance with specifications, codes and drawings


Designated/Other Duties As Assigned


  • Other duties as assigned

  • Work/on-call during inclement weather and emergencies

  • Assume on-call responsibility on a rotating basis


Computer Skills/AiM


  • Utilize computer skills to access email and research parts/information as required

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of AiM and AiM GO ensuring prompt completion of work requests and time card entry following all established work flow processes including notes logs for all work requests over 30 days


Organize Mechanical Areas


  • Clean and organize materials in the Shop and mechanical area

  • Participates in periodic cleaning of shop


Shift/Hours of Work: Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Several years' experience in commercial/institutional HVAC and mechanical maintenance

  • Ability to diagnose, repair, service and install a wide variety of HVAC and mechanical systems.

  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to supervision, other employees and customers

  • Knowledge of appropriate building codes

  • Ability to read/interpret drawings, plans, specifications and scopes

  • Ability to use a wide variety of hand tools and power equipment

  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required

  • State of Virginia Driver's License required

  • Universal EPA Certification

  • State of Virginia Journeyman HVAC License required or the ability to obtain within the first year of employment

  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU


Salary Range

$65,000 - $75,000 ($31.25/hr - $36.05/hr) + upto $5,000 Sign-on Bonus
