Job description

This job post is a little different than what you might normally read. I want to have a direct conversation with you. I need you. But only if you can write and I mean, really write.

I run a marketing agency called Underdog Digital. We write copy for a lot of clients, across a lot of industries, across a lot of platforms, every single week.

Right now, that copy comes from a few different people. Some of it lands. Some of it doesn't sound like anyone in particular. And when three writers touch three different clients, you start to see the cracks. I want to create consistency.

I don't want copy that's fine. I want copy that sounds like it came from one person who actually understands the client, every time, no matter who's on the account that week.

Here's the deeper thing. I believe words move people. I am a copywriting nerd. I believe every line should make someone want to read the next line. Every word we write matters. A good email gets opened. A good page gets someone to buy. A good line gets remembered.

So if you've studied Ogilvy, if you've read Halbert and Sugarman, if you know who Sam Parr is, I want to talk to you. I'm not looking for someone who writes nice sentences. I'm looking for someone who understands that copy either moves someone to act or it's wasted space.

That's the job.

What you'd actually be doing

You'd write copy for marketing emails, social channels, websites, and landing pages across a group of clients, spanning a wide range of industries. Some weeks you're writing for a physical therapy clinic. Some weeks it's a payroll company or a nonprofit. The brief changes. The standard doesn't.

You'd own the voice on your accounts. Not just spelling and grammar, the actual sound of the brand, and the action you want the reader to take by the last line. You'd take a rough brief and turn it into copy that sounds like a real person wrote it for a real audience, not like it came out of a template.

You'd report directly to me. Right now there's no creative director standing between you and the person making the call, which means less waiting on approvals and more of your judgment actually shaping the work. Copy goes through one round of client review before it ships, so you'll see how your writing performs, not just whether it got approved.

You'd work inside our content calendar and hit deadlines without someone standing over you. I'm not training you on what a call-to-action is. I'm trusting you to run with a brief and come back with something good.

Who this job is for

  • You've got real experience writing marketing copy that performed, not just existed.

  • Agency background is a plus because you already know what it's like to switch brand voices five times before lunch.

  • You have a portfolio. Not just your best piece, but a body of work that shows you can hold a client's voice steady across formats. For example, email sounds different from a landing page. Both should still sound like the same brand, and both should ask for something specific.

  • You know how to use AI tools to draft faster. You also know the difference between a draft and a finished piece, and you never confuse the two. If your writing sounds like it could belong to anyone, it's not ready. I will notice.

The practical stuff

This is full-time. Hybrid, two days a week in our Underdog Digital office in Irmo, and the rest is flexible.

Starting salary is $60,000. Health benefits, unlimited PTO, and real room to grow into a senior or lead writer role as we take on more clients. I'd like someone in the seat within the next 4 to 6 weeks.

While it’s preferred that the person above comes into the office two days a week, I will entertain a remote role for the right person. I would also entertain something flexible like part-time, again, for the right person.
