The Hornblower Group is seeking a Marine Technician to support maintenance and repair of passenger vessels based in Charlestown, MA and Quincy, MA. You will perform diesel engine and machinery maintenance on vessels in the fleet, with work conducted dockside and in dry dock, complying with USCG inspections.

The role requires hands-on experience with diesel engines, ability to work outdoors in varying weather, and willingness to work weekends and holidays, wearing PPE when required.

Qualifications

Job description

Position Summary

The Marine Technician position is a shore‑side based role that supports a comprehensive program of maintenance and repair of the passenger vessels in City Experiences’ fleet. These vessels, inspected by the USCG and powered primarily by diesel engines, vary in size and construction. The role is based in Charlestown, Massachusetts for the Boston and North of Boston fleet, and in Quincy, Massachusetts for the Boston and South of Boston fleet.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance on diesel engines and other machinery found on passenger vessels, including diesel main engines, diesel auxiliary generators, water jet propulsion equipment, marine reduction gears, hydraulic systems for steering, cranes, and thrusters.
• Perform heavy machinery maintenance and repair work, including engine valve gear timing, injector changes, cylinder head and liner overhauls, and machinery rigging in and out of vessels.
• Execute water jet maintenance and repair while the vessel is in the water or in dry dock.
• Repair vessel and dockside plumbing, including pipes, valves, tanks, and pumps.
• Troubleshoot and repair vessel electrical systems, generators, motors, control systems, sensors, and related wiring, including low‑voltage and battery‑powered starting, control, electronic control, and monitoring systems.
• Conduct dry‑dock repairs at shipyards on vessel drive lines, water jets, couplings, and shafts, supporting shipyard personnel and/or the Port Engineer.
• Document and monitor maintenance and repair work through the company web‑based structured maintenance and repair program.
• Participate in computer‑based monitoring and input of maintenance tasks, work hours, and company training and documentation programs.
• Work the hours and shifts assigned by the Port Engineer.
• Perform additional marine maintenance and repair work, either dock‑side or on vessels, as required by the Port Engineer.
• Support the maintenance division’s goal of achieving consistent vessel reliability through proper maintenance and repair practices.
• Complete any additional job duties assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Unlicensed engine room machinery technicians with prior training and experience on motor vessels such as work boats, tugs, fishing vessels, passenger vessels, or vessels of the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Diesel or heavy machinery mechanics from a trades institution, U.S. Armed Forces, or other industries requiring hands‑on repair of engines and engine‑related systems.
• Basic computer skills and excellent communication skills.
• Physical strength and agility to safely lift over 50 lbs., move within a moving passenger vessel, work in tight spaces, and around moving machinery; able to work outdoors in uncomfortable weather conditions.
• Willingness to wear personal safety clothing and equipment such as hard hats, gloves, masks, and life vests as necessary.
• Availability to work weekends and on all major holidays.
