Job summary

THOR Solutions, LLC is actively seeking a Journeyman-Level Marine Electronics Engineer to support the USCG Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. The role focuses on interior communications, machinery control systems, power management, and propulsion control.

Primary onsite work at USCG Headquarters with occasional telework consideration; up to 10% travel for ship checks. A SECRET clearance is required; U.S. citizenship is mandatory.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical/engineering/marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least three (3) years of experience developing and integrating Internal Communications, Shipboard Telephone, Announcing, and Alarm Systems; familiarity with standards.
  • Meets DoD IAT Level II Baseline Certification requirements (one active cert from the list).

Responsibilities

  • Design electric and electronic systems; study power generation and distribution, and centralized machinery monitoring and control.
  • Develop and evaluate moderately complex technical reports for C5I shipboard systems.
  • Review and evaluate effects of new/modified electronics on system performance.
  • Review specifications, test requirements, DFSs, RFWs, ECs; travel up to 10% to CONUS locations.

Job description

THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated Journeyman-Level Marine Electronics Engineer with experience in Interior Communications to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience developing and integrating machinery control systems, electrical power management, auxiliary machinery control, and propulsion control.

Typical Responsibilities:
  • Conduct design of electric and electronic systems, study power generation and distribution, centralized machinery monitoring and control.
  • Apply knowledge of and experience with engineering principles and techniques to develop and evaluate moderately complex technical reports related to application of C5I systems onboard USCG ships.
  • Review and evaluate the effect of new and/or modified electronics on overall system performance.
  • Review and adjudicate system design specifications, test requirements, Departures from Specification (DFS’s), Request for Waiver (RFW), Engineering Changes (EC’s).
    Location: Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates.

Travel: Up to 10% travel to CONUS locations is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Physical Activity:

Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., tight spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $80,000 – 100,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

Eligibility for a SECRET Security Clearance is Required: This position requires eligibility for a Secret security clearance, to be obtained afterhire. Only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance; therefore, only current U.S. citizens will be considered for this position.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Bachelor’s degree in System Architecture, Electronics, Marine Engineering, or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least three (3) years of recent, relevant professional experience developing and integrating Internal Communications, Shipboard Telephone, Announcing, and Alarm Systems, experience designing systems to meet the requirements industry or international standards.
  • Meets DoD IAT Level II Baseline Certification requirements. This can be met by holding any ONE active certification from the following list:
    • CCNA Security
    • CySA+
    • GICSP
    • GSEC
    • Security+ CE
    • SSCP
    • CASP CE
    • CCNP Security
    • CISA
    • CISSP (or Associate)
    • GCED
    • GCIH
  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, ABS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communication skills.
Additional Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Master’s degree.
  • Prior experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs.
  • Previous experience with shipboard and defense C5i systems.
  • Experience gained in a USCG, Navy, commercial shipbuilding, or other maritime environment is highly preferred.
  • Experience with IP-based video surveillance and storage systems.
