Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Norfolk, VA is seeking a Staff Civil/Structural Engineer to lead the civil/structural design of marine projects from concept through design completion, including piers, wharfs, bulkheads and fender systems.

You will balance design integrity with project constraints, prepare drawings and specs, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate with clients and senior engineers to ensure technical excellence and on-time delivery.

Qualifications

• ABET-accredited bachelor's degree required or FE exam.
• Minimum 3–5 years of related civil/structural engineering experience.
• PE license strongly preferred or ability to obtain within a year.
• EIT certification required.
• Advanced knowledge of civil/structural engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to lead tasks.
• Proficiency in MS Office and engineering software.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil/structural design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Design and analyze civil/structural components for a variety of projects.
• Apply advanced knowledge of engineering design concepts, principles, codes, and procedures.
• Prepare and review drawings, specifications, and other engineering documents.
• Lead client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration.
• Perform and oversee field inspections, measurements, and calculations.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.
• Comply with all policies and standards.
