Muskingum University invites applications for a part-time Marching Band Director. This position will provide leadership in developing, growing, and maintaining a marching band program. Through ensemble direction, student recruitment, and program administration the Director will foster musical excellence, school spirit, student development, and program growth.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Direct the Muskingum University Marching Band, including twice-weekly rehearsals, five home football game performances, and other campus or local appearances, as scheduled.
- Direct the ensemble in its spring configuration as a pep band at selected athletic events.
- Plan and prepare all musical and visual programming, including music selection, arranging or commissioning as needed, and drill design using Pyware or comparable software.
- Plan and lead a four-day preseason band camp prior to the start of fall classes.
- Coordinate performance logistics with appropriate campus offices, such as Athletics, Facilities, and the Department of Music.
Recruitment (25%)
- Conduct one to two high school visits per week during the academic year, building and maintaining relationships with area band directors.
- Represent the marching band at on-campus recruiting events, including the Involvement Fair, Instrumental Youth Fest, Hooked on the Arts events, and other admissions visit days.
- Partner with Admissions and the Department of Music to identify and contact prospective students, including current Muskingum students with high school band experience.
- Maintain recruitment records and track enrollment and yield data to measure program success.
Supervision of Student Workers (15%)
- Manage the marching band operating budget in coordination with the Chair of the Departmentof Music.
- Maintain inventories of instruments, uniforms, and equipment, including repair, replacement, and storage.
- Recruit, train, and supervise student leadership (drum majors, section leaders, equipment and library assistants).
- Support marketing and branding efforts for the ensemble in coordination with university communications.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Bachelor’s degree inmusic education or comparable field, plus experience directing marching bands.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, particularly with event coordination and budget tracking.
- Ability to work effectively with students, faculty, employers, and community partners.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and project management skills.
