Location: Greater Minneapolis Area
The Manufacturing Technician/Tool Maker is responsible for designing, constructing, and maintaining precision tools, dies, and fixtures used in the manufacturing process. This role requires interpreting technical drawings, utilizing a variety of machine tools, and ensuring that tools meet exact specifications for production. Additionally, the Tool Maker provides technical support in areas such as production, operations, maintenance, safety, testing, process improvement, or product development.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and Fabrication
- Design components or portions of systems and modify existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing and field service operations. Create precision tools, dies, jigs, and fixtures according to engineering drawings and specifications.
- Utilization of Design Tools
- Utilize computer-aided design equipment and graphic tools such as CAD, CAM, CATIA, ProEngineer, Solidworx, or Siemens NX Software to gather information, make studies, compute calculations, and prepare original rough layouts and sketches to present design proposals.
- Coordination
- Coordinate design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning groups, considering ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.
- Operation of Machine Tools
- Operate lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other machine tools to fabricate parts and tools.
- Maintenance and Repair
- Maintain and repair tools and equipment to ensure they are in proper working order.
- Quality Control
- Inspect completed tools and dies to ensure they meet the required specifications and quality standards.
- Testing and Troubleshooting
- Use schematics, diagrams, written and verbal descriptions, or defined plans to perform testing and troubleshooting on electronic or mechanical components, equipment, or systems.
- Collaboration and Documentation
- Work closely with engineers, production teams, and other stakeholders to troubleshoot and optimize tool performance. Maintain accurate records of tool designs, modifications, and maintenance activities.
Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Skills
- Proficient in the use of machine tools and CAD software for designing tools. Ability to perform detailed mathematical calculations and manipulate technical data.
- Attention to Detail
- High degree of precision and attention to detail in creating and inspecting tools.
- Problem-Solving
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues with tools and dies.
- Communication
- Good communication skills to collaborate with team members and other departments. Ability to obtain and provide technical information requiring some explanation or interpretation.
Education and Experience
- Required Knowledge and Experience
- Requires a minimum of 1 year of relevant experience. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, or vocational or technical education or certification.
- Autonomy and Impact
- Established and productive individual contributor, working under moderate supervision. Performs intermediate technical activities requiring judgment and decision-making, typically routine technical tasks.
- Innovation and Complexity
- Faces generally routine technical problems, which may require interpretation of procedures or policies to resolve. May highlight areas of concern/problems in own job area.
- Leadership and Talent Management
- May provide guidance and assistance to new or entry-level employees.
