Job description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Stamping Process Engineer (Consultant) to join our team on a consulting basis. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in metal stamping processes and the ability to interpret complex engineering designs. This role is critical in bridging the gap between product design and manufacturing feasibility. The consultant will oversee stamping process development, coordinate with design engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams (quality, tooling, production, and supply chain) to ensure seamless product launch and production ramp-up.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design Review & Feasibility Analysis:
  • Read, interpret, and analyze engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, and GD&T data for stamped metal components.
  • Provide early design feedback to product engineers to optimize part geometry for manufacturability, cost reduction, and quality improvement.
  • Conduct stamping feasibility studies including formability analysis, springback prediction, and die layout validation.
  • Process Development & Optimization:
  • Develop, implement, and optimize stamping processes (progressive, transfer, and tandem dies) for new and existing products.
  • Establish process parameters (press speeds, tonnage, lubrication, clearance, etc.) to achieve consistent part quality and dimensional accuracy.
  • Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for stamping-related quality issues (wrinkling, tearing, springback, burrs, etc.).
  • Cross-Functional Coordination:
  • Act as a technical liaison between design, manufacturing, quality, tooling, and supplier teams to ensure alignment on project goals and timelines.
  • Facilitate design-for-manufacturing (DFM) workshops and coordinate design changes with stakeholders.
  • Support tooling suppliers during die design, tryout, and buyoff phases to ensure dies meet process and quality requirements.
  • Production Support & Troubleshooting:
  • Provide on-floor technical support during prototype, pre-production, and production builds.
  • Troubleshoot stamping line issues, implement temporary and permanent corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Monitor process capability (Cp/Cpk) and drive yield improvement and scrap reduction.
  • Documentation & Reporting:
  • Develop and maintain process documentation including PFMEA, process flow diagrams, control plans, and work instructions.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, process status updates, and improvement recommendations to leadership and cross-functional teams.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor\'s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum 8–10 years of hands-on experience in metal stamping process engineering within the automotive or heavy manufacturing industry.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting 2D drawings, 3D CAD models (CATIA, NX, or similar), and GD&T.
  • Strong understanding of stamping die design, press types, and material behavior (steel, aluminum, high-strength steels).
  • Knowledge of simulation software (AutoForm, Pam-Stamp, or similar) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with quality tools such as PFMEA, APQP, PPAP, and SPC.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills to work effectively with designers, tooling engineers, quality teams, and suppliers.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities with a hands-on approach.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
