Job summary

Trane Technologies is seeking a Manufacturing Engineering Intern to learn on the production floor while supporting engineering, quality and maintenance teams. The role focuses on assembly operations, data collection, and process improvements in a fast-paced environment.

You will gain hands-on experience with Lean manufacturing concepts, time studies, line balancing, and documentation workflows, while developing practical knowledge of manufacturing systems and equipment.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in Bachelor's program in a related engineering field with sophomore year completed.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and problem-solving methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily assembly operations and assist engineers on the floor.
  • Observe processes, document workflows, and help troubleshoot issues.
  • Assist with updating work instructions and process documents.
  • Participate in Lean and continuous improvement projects.
  • Collect data, perform time studies, and assist with line balancing.
  • Support equipment installation, testing, and validation activities.
  • Contribute to safety, quality, and productivity improvements.

Field-based: Work is conducted on-site at customer locations.

The Manufacturing Engineering Intern will work directly with manufacturing engineers, production personnel, quality teams, and maintenance technicians to support assembly operations and continuous improvement initiatives. This hands-on position provides practical experience in manufacturing processes, problem-solving, process improvement, and production support within a fast-paced assembly environment. The intern will spend significant time on the manufacturing floor learning production processes, assisting with engineering projects, collecting data, and supporting efforts to improve safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
Production Support
  • Assist manufacturing engineers in supporting daily assembly operations.
  • Observe and document manufacturing processes and workflows.
  • Help troubleshoot production issues and support implementation of corrective actions.
  • Assist with updating work instructions, process documentation, and assembly procedures.
Continuous Improvement
  • Participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement projects.
  • Collect and analyze production data to identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assist with time studies, workflow analysis, and line balancing activities.
  • Support implementation of process improvements and error-proofing solutions.
Equipment and Tooling
  • Assist with assembly fixture, tooling, and workstation improvement projects.
  • Support equipment installation, testing, and validation activities.
  • Work alongside maintenance personnel to understand equipment operation and reliability practices.
  • Participate in ergonomic and workplace organization initiatives.
Quality Support
  • Assist with investigations into manufacturing and assembly quality issues.
  • Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities.
  • Help gather and organize quality and process performance data.
  • Participate in process audits and inspections as assigned.
Project Support
  • Assist engineering staff with manufacturing projects and process improvement initiatives.
  • Track project activities, action items, and progress updates.
  • Support new product introduction activities and engineering change implementation.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and project documentation.
Floor Engagement
  • Maintain an active presence on the production floor.
  • Work directly with operators to learn assembly processes and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Participate in safety initiatives and continuous improvement activities.
  • Develop practical knowledge of manufacturing systems, processes, and equipment.
Qualifications Required
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • Completion of sophomore year preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and interest in manufacturing operations.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles and problem-solving methods.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred
  • Previous manufacturing, maintenance, fabrication, or skilled trades experience.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing concepts.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or AutoCAD.
  • Experience working in team-based environments.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work on the production floor for extended periods.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to safely work around manufacturing equipment and machinery while following all safety requirements.
Annual Base Salary Range or Hourly Base Pay Range:
