Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to lead fabrication of complex mechanical hardware for space, defense, and science programs in our Laurel, MD center.

You will apply DFMA, GD&T (ASME Y14.5), and a broad range of fabrication processes, collaborating with engineers, machinists, and program teams to deliver high-quality hardware on schedule and within budget.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 3+ years of manufacturing engineering experience across multiple fabrication processes.
  • Experience with CAD tools such as CREO or SolidWorks.
  • Able to interpret drawings and apply GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Willing to travel and obtain Secret clearance; U.S. citizenship required.
  • Experience with prototype hardware development and transitioning to manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME for mechanical fabrication technologies (machining, additive manufacturing, welding, sheet metal, composites).
  • Apply DFMA to improve manufacturability, quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Interpret drawings and GD&T to translate design intent into manufacturing solutions.
  • Develop manufacturing plans, process flows, and production strategies for prototype hardware.
  • Leverage ERP/MRP systems to support production planning and material management.
  • Coordinate with engineers, machinists, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve issues.
  • Develop manufacturing estimates, schedules, and resource plans for complex fabrication.
  • Lead or support R&D to evaluate and implement advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Stay current with emerging manufacturing technologies and standards.
  • Strengthen APL's manufacturing ecosystem through leadership and process improvement.
