Job summary

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) seeks an experienced Experimental Machinist to join our fabrication team in Laurel, MD. You will operate 3-axis and multi-axis CNC mills, study solid models, and interpret blueprints with GD&T to manufacture spacecraft hardware and test systems.

This role reports to the fabrication group and offers a Monday–Friday schedule with overtime as needed.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 5+ years of CNC setup, programming, and operation.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software, Mastercam preferred.
  • Proficiency with email and office applications.
  • GD&T blueprint interpretation.
  • Experience with vertical or multi-axis CNC milling.
  • Experience with conventional milling.
  • Ability to acquire Interim Secret clearance by start date and eligibility for Secret.

Responsibilities

  • Set up, program, maintain, and operate CNC/conventional milling machines end-to-end with minimal direction.
  • Interpret solid models and blueprints with GD&T.
  • In-process inspection using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, etc.
  • Collaborate with engineers/designers on complex designs and provide fabrication insight.
  • Maintain proficiency with quality processes.
  • Record duration of work in ERP per procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
